We approach the consultation for the Government's #PathwaystoWork #GreenPaper with hope that the ambitions for #inclusiveemployment will not be delivered through widening #inequalities. Brandon Trust Chief Executive Helen E. said: "It will be vital that a wide cross section of voices are actively engaged and listened to." #socialcarematters #morethanaprovider #gloriouslyordinarylives
CEO at Brandon Trust | Organisational Design & Development Expert | Specialist in health and social care policy, partnerships, governance and transformational change
Like many others, I find myself thinking today about how we best support people into employment when they face barriers that can make it harder to access work. Our retail shops at Brandon Trust create jobs for autistic people and people with learning disabilities and it is wonderful to see people thrive in those roles and take pride in their work and the contribution they make to their team. The proposals announced today as part of the 'Pathways to Work' green paper signal significant changes to benefits and employment support and understandably there are many people asking what these changes could mean. As the proposals are consulted on, it will be vital that a wide cross section of voices are actively engaged and listened to, so that the barriers people face in accessing work are understood, and solutions for expanding meaningful employment support designed accordingly. If we want an inclusive job market where diverse people across all age groups can succeed, then we need an inclusive consultation process and effective support pathways that genuinely work well. There are respected organisations such as Youth Futures Foundation generating evidence of #whatworks to overcome barriers to employment and this will be a critical asset in what comes next. There will be many organisations now advocating with disabled people so that the risk of widening the inequalities they already face is mitigated. This #InternationalWomensDay our Chief Executive Helen E. shares her thoughts on #acceleratingaction in social care. “Working in social care brings countless rewards, but today #IWD2025 I want to highlight the incredible women I have the privilege to work with. The theme for this year is #acceleratingaction, to promote both equity and equality for women. It's a time to recognise the importance of creating opportunities for women to realise their potential and be fully included in all aspects of society. At Brandon Trust we've championed this mandate for people with learning disabilities and autistic people for the past 30 years. While we've made significant strides as a society, we must now accelerate action. We need a more inclusive approach to education, a broader range of employment opportunities, and a social care system that prioritises the outcomes that matter to people. A crucial milestone is recognising the unique talents and potential of individuals whose strengths differ from our own, and whose contributions are invaluable. The talent of women at Brandon Trust impresses me daily. This week, I've seen LinkedIn posts about #IWD reminding us that action is ultimately an important measure of our commitment. At Brandon, we are not complacent about our need for further improvement and recognise that there is always more to do. But we can confidently celebrate the steps we've taken. Today, I celebrate three serving female executive directors who have excelled in leadership without taking a traditional academic route, demonstrating that impactful careers can take many forms. Women here continue to shape our organisation at every level and their contributions make Brandon Trust what it is today, from executive to frontline roles and from governance to advocacy. Just this month a woman with a learning disability has stepped into the Co-Chair role for our Safeguarding Panel. We have brilliant women on our Board of Trustees who bring a superb blend of expertise, wisdom, and experience. I recognise the achievements of women in our Operational, Enterprise, and Senior Leadership Teams, many of whom started as support workers and continue to make a significant impact in social care. Over the next year, we are committed to expanding the involvement of #autistic women and women with #learningdisabilities. Creating space for different ways of working is crucial, whether that’s embracing neurodiversity or understanding the challenges women face in a world where diagnosis gaps persist. We all know the familiar mantra: action, not words. By accelerating action, we can continue to dismantle the barriers that still exist for some women, ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to thrive.” Tanya Abbott Tracy Date Kate Doodson FBCS Donna Colley (she/her) Chartered FCIPD Rob Porter Mark Stupples Claire Feehily Ije Jombo-ofo Rachel Jones Leigh Griffin John Bryant FRSA David Francis Simon Wall FCIPD #morethanaprovider
