This week, our Central Support team found out how AI can transform the way charities work, even with tight budgets and small teams. Leading the session was Peter Heneghan, founder of The Future Communicator and a communications expert with experience at BBC News, Channel 4, and BuzzFeed. The workshop demonstrated how AI can be an accessible tool for charities looking to do more with less. Peter shared practical, real-world applications of AI that can help streamline workflows and enhance efficiency. This will allow us to free up time and resources so we can focus more on the people we support. A huge thank you to Peter and everyone who joined the session! We’re excited to explore these ideas further and harness AI to drive positive change. #AIForGood #CharitySector #SocialCareSector

We’re Hft, a charity on a mission to create a future where learning disabled people can live the best life possible
About us
We are a national charity, founded in 1962. We pioneered the idea that learning disabled adults have the right to choices about how they live and how they are supported, to enable them to lead the best life possible. We continue to explore ways to deliver this for people every day. Learning disabled people face obstacles that are hard to imagine. We use our skills, experience, and creative ideas to help people to overcome them. Our Fusion Model of Support is key in this – it’s how we ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone we support. It challenges us to provide consistent, high-quality services. We support people in all areas of their life: developing practical skills, connecting them to their community, helping them to get a job and introducing them to technology that can help them to live as independently as possible. Local authority social care budgets have historically funded our services. But ongoing cuts have placed mounting pressure on local authorities and providers. Today, it’s common to find that local authority budgets will cover only the basics, or funding for only those with the most complex needs. We don’t feel that is enough. So we also raise money for things that are no longer funded to make sure people can live the best life possible.

Meaningful employment should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we’re excited to share that two of our Project SEARCH interns have secured paid jobs at ClwydAlyn! After working in the café during their internships, Thomas and Paige impressed the team so much that they were offered permanent roles. Their manager, Angela, shared: “It’s really beneficial having Hft job coaches on hand and available to provide any support. I have found the job coaches to be very friendly and always willing to help with any issues. I would definitely recommend Hft to other businesses.” This success shows how valuable supported internships can be for both job seekers and employers. If your business wants to create a more inclusive workforce, we’d love to hear from you! #InclusiveEmployment #SupportedInternships #LearningDisabilityAllies #SupportedEmployment

While the Holocaust is remembered rightly as an act of genocide against Europe’s Jewish population, the Nazis also sent close to 250,000 disabled people to their deaths. Holocaust Memorial Day this year marks 80 years from the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Blue Apple Theatre, who make theatre, dance, singing and film by learning disabled performers, has made a short documentary to observe the day. Richard Conlon, Blue Apple’s Artistic Director, said: “Our performers and participants know that those who went before them had bigger challenges to face, but the journey isn’t over. We’ve had conversations about how we can’t take all recent advances for granted – they may not stay forever unless we actively advocate for them.” Please take the time to watch this important short documentary and share it with your networks. #HolocaustMemorialDay #HolocaustMemorialDay2025

"I fail to see why carers, despite mostly being public care workers, do not get the wages that reflect the tireless work that they put in to keep those with hidden disabilities from falling through the cracks of the modern world," says Will, who's autistic and draws on support from Hft. He continues: "Many of them are being forced to leave the sector because of rising prices of living, unexpected circumstances or just not earning enough to justify the hours." There's a shortage of Support Workers in the UK. This year's Sector Pulse Check report revealed that 33% of providers experienced a decrease in applications last year, despite numbers already being low. Support work is vital to make sure every learning disabled adult can live the best life possible. All Support Workers deserve an adequate wage and to enjoy the same benefits as the NHS. “I am really hoping that going forward we can get the funding we need. We need the government to listen.” - Support Worker Briony. 85% of social care providers reported that local authority fees didn't increase in line with the rising minimum wage last year. This is why we’re calling for fair funding and real action to address the crisis in social care. It’s time for the government to step up and ensure that care workers like Briony and the people they support aren’t left behind. 2028 is too late for social care reform. #28TooLate #LearningDisabilityAllies #SocialCare #SocialCareCrisis
