As part of our ongoing series, we are spotlighting emerging markets beyond the big four. This week, our focus is on East Africa. Similar to West Africa, where #Nigeria leads in funding, Kenya captures the majority of funding in East Africa, establishing itself as a leading ecosystem. Among the top-funded Kenyan companies include Sun King, M-KOPA, and Tala. In terms of funding volume, #Rwanda follows Kenya, largely driven by Zipline’s funding in 2023, which accounts for nearly 30% of the total funding. Fintech is the top sector, and JALI Finance and Boss Money Africa are some of the most funded companies in this sector. #Uganda has seen notable investment activity, with its total deal count. The largest overall funding and deal activity occurred in 2022, with companies like Tugende filling the credit gap for motorcycle riders, Asaak, also changing the asset financing game for mobility players and SolarNow among the top-funded companies in the region. #Solar energy and payment solutions are the top two funded products in East Africa - with and without the Kenyan companies.
