This week's BASELine is now LIVE, featuring a roundup of the week's news, insights and innovation from across the category, with this week's special Big Question coming Esme Pitts, Commercial Manager at Sky Read now: https://lnkd.in/eizJ35Wk We asked Esme - BASE recently announced the trial of a unique new partnership between ODEON Cinemas Group and Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios "Go Big AND Go Home", a first of its kind between Theatrical and Home Entertainment. What will your next big screen title AND at-home digital entertainment purchase be? She said: "Gladiator II, no question! Anyone who isn’t excited to see Paul, Denzel and Pedro make their gladiator debuts is lying. Early reactions have been very positive so I’m holding out hope that Ridley actually does a great job on this one (no offence to Napoleon and House of Gucci….). • Celebrating Women in Entertainment: BASE & DEGI launch International Hedy Lamarr Leadership and Rising Star Awards, honouring female leaders shaping the UK entertainment industry. At last month’s BASE Awards, we were delighted to reveal the winners of the inaugural international BASE and DEGI Hedy Lamarr Leadership Awards, celebrating women who exemplify tenacity, teamwork, and leadership in UK entertainment. Congratulations to Marie-Claire Benson (Lionsgate UK), Anna Godas (Dogwoof), and Helen P. (Universal Pictures Content Group) for their outstanding achievements and recognition by the whole of the UK Home Entertainment Industry. Johanna Beaven (NBCUniversal) was the first-ever recipient of the Hedy Lamarr Rising Star Award. As part of this honour, Johanna will receive personal coaching from Monica Chadha, non-executive director of The British Film Institute, Board Advisor to Marlow Film Studios, and (prev.) Chair of the British Independent Film Awards Advisory Board. Monica commented: “Many many congratulations to all the nominees and to Johanna for being the inaugural recipient of this important award. To the extent that we achieve success through people before technology or numbers, I couldn’t be more proud to give back to an industry that has given me so much. BASE and DEGI are to be commended on building the leadership bench in the home entertainment sector and potentially changing the career trajectory of human lives.” The prestigious Hedy Lamarr Award was conceived eight years ago in the US by DEGI sister organisation, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. The DEG Hedy Lamarr Awards continue to celebrate inspirational female leaders in entertainment technology. In December 2024, Caroline Chan, VP Network and Edge Group at Intel, will be awarded the 2024 DEG Hedy Lamarr Award for Innovation in Entertainment Technology at an event in LA. The DEG also present a Hedy Lamarr bursary and award each year to a Junior-year female student at a US college. Liz Bales, CEO of BASE and DEGI, shared: “I am thrilled that we have been able to embrace the values and spirit of the long-standing DEG Hedy Lamarr award at BASE and DEGI. This award enables us to celebrate established and aspiring female leadership, while it’s connection to the BASE and DEGI Industry Mentor Programme will foster individual professional growth by connecting emerging talent with expert industry professionals to the mutual benefit of each. Beginning in January 2025, the programme will run as a six-month trial for the five shortlisted nominees of the inaugural 2024 Hedy Lamarr Rising Star Award.” Click here to read the full article and observations from the winners and their colleagues: https://lnkd.in/dWRvQxJz Amy Jo Smith; Ron Schwartz; Elizabeth Karlsen; Alex Gibney; Sally Aitken; Peter Kujawski; Johnny Fewings; Ian Durndell; Melanie Nicholas; Sima Westley

  • We are excited to share the third of the nominated commercials for the British Arrows Young Arrows Student Commercial of the Year award! Today, we are spotlighting “The Cinema Chair Experience” by Sabrina Krebs, created from a brief provided by BASE during their time on the National Film & Television School Directing Commercials Diploma. Speaking on their commercial and how the BASE brief helped shape it, Sabrina said: “When I received the BASE brief, I wanted to emphasize the unique experience of watching a film in the cinema. In a world where we often consume films and series on personal devices, it’s easy to forget the immersive power of the big screen. There's something magical about how a larger-than-life display pulls us deeper into a story, making us feel as though we're part of the movie itself. I aimed to capture that enchantment— something my generation may sometimes overlook, given the convenience of digital streaming" Watch the full commercial below and join us in celebrating the creative future and talent of our industry. • We are excited to share the second of the nominated commercials for the British Arrows Young Arrows Student Commercial of the Year award! Today, we are spotlighting “Racers” by Sorin Balta, created from a brief provided by BASE during their time on the National Film & Television School Directing Commercials Diploma. Speaking on their commercial and how the BASE brief helped shape it, Sorin said: “BASE offered us such a special symbol for our film: the cinema chair. The idea was to show that a cinema seat isn’t static—it’s a place where stories come to life, and the viewer embarks on a journey." • We are excited to share the first of the nominated commercials for the British Arrows Young Arrows Student Commercial of the Year award! Today, we are spotlighting “Not Another Medical Drama” by Eleanna Santorinaiou, created from a brief provided by BASE during her time on the National Film & Television School Directing Commercials Diploma. Speaking on her commercial and how the BASE brief helped shape it, Eleanna said: “The BASE brief was the spark to bring this film to life - I used the premise of downgrading a scene in front of the audience's eyes and I pushed it further when I decided to do it in one long shot. I wanted the audience to feel how bad it can get real quick when there's no budget" Watch the full commercial below and join us in celebrating the creative future and talent of our industry, and stay tuned for the other two nominated commercials! What will your next big screen title AND at-home digital entertainment purchase be? She said: "The title I'm most looking forward to and excited to watch on the big screen is The Substance, with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, even if I do have to watch it from behind my hands! For my Home Entertainment choice, it would have to be Wonka. I'm interested in seeing how Timothee Chalamet portrays a younger and fresher version of the iconic character compared to how we've previously seen Willy Wonka come to life with Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp." Please click the link below to subscribe if you haven't already, and get our curated weekly roundup of industry news, insights and resources each Friday morning: https://lnkd.in/e8V-x6Eb
