The new Marine Environment Monitoring and Assessment National database V2.0 (MERMAN+) has been released in production. MERMAN+ holds quality-assured marine environmental data, collected and uploaded into MERMAN+ by UK Competent Monitoring Authorities (CMAs) under the Clean Seas Environmental Monitoring Programme (CSEMP) - formerly the National Marine Monitoring Programme (NMMP). MERMAN+ is owned, hosted and funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). In addition, MERMAN+ is also funded by the @Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA); Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) and the Scottish Marine Directorate (SMD). Across the UK, multiple organisations operate as the CMAs: ✳️AFBI ✳️Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) ✳️DAERA ✳️Environment Agency (EA) ✳️SMD, with additional contributions on contaminants data on behalf of Food Standards Scotland (FSS) ✳️Natural Resources Wales (NRW) ✳️Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) On behalf of the UK Government (Defra), the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) support CMAs in submitting and verifying their data and prepare MERMAN+ data for onward submissions and reports. The Clean Seas Environmental Monitoring Programme is a coordinated initiative that efficiently monitors environmental conditions within the coastal and estuarine areas of the UK. The primary objectives of CSEMP encompass: 🌊Detection of long-term spatial and temporal trends in physical, biological, and chemical variables at selected estuarine and coastal sites. 🌊 Support for consistent standards in national and international monitoring programs pertaining to marine environmental quality. 🌊Establishment of appropriate regulatory measures to protect marine ecosystems. 🌊Coordination and optimisation of marine monitoring activities across the UK. 🌊Provision of a high-quality dataset encompassing chemical and biological observations within the UK's marine environment. This programme fulfils UK’s statutory national assessments and reporting obligations under UK Marine Strategy Regulations 2010, and mandatory reporting obligations under the Oslo Paris Convention 1992 (OSPAR) including mandatory monitoring requirements under OSPAR's Joint Assessment Monitoring Programme (JAMP). The reporting commitments to OSPAR are met through the annual onward submission of MERMAN+ data to the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Data is submitted in annual cycles released for reporting in September each year. MERMAN+ data are also submitted to European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Chemistry to support European marine data initiatives. Addi...

The BODC Published Data Library (PDL) is a catalogue of datasets which have been assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). We work with scientists to create a data management plan at the beginning of a project and agree which data will have a DOI. Assigning DOI's makes the data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable (FAIR). Not all data held at BODC have been allocated DOIs. The data within a DOI are freely available. Marine rock samples collected by dredge or remotely operated vehicles (ROV) are an exceptional resource of immense scientific value which help inform geoscience research and contribute to the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council research areas including Earth resources, mantle and core processes, physics & chemistry of Earth materials and volcanic processes. Currently, there is no repository for marine rock samples collected by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded scientists and research ships so a Rock Store Working Group, involving the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the British Geological Survey, the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Southampton, University of Strathclyde, The University of Edinburgh and The University of Manchester are inviting the UK’s marine science community to complete a survey which will help define the future requirements for marine dredge rock and ROV rock samples facilities. Results will be provided to the NOC Association of Marine Science National Capability Beneficiaries to consider next steps. The survey is open to UKRI-NERC funded scientists and the closing date for responses is 18 December 2024. Complete the survey 👇 https://bit.ly/4dgWcUv
