About us

The Crown Estate is a significant national landowner with a diverse £16bn portfolio that includes urban centres and development opportunities; one of the largest rural holdings in the country; Regent Street and St James’s in London’s West End; and Windsor Great Park. We also manage the seabed and much of the coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland, playing a major role in the UK’s world leading offshore wind sector. We are a unique business with a unique heritage. Set up by an Act of Parliament, and occupying a space between the public and private sector, we act independently and commercially to grow the value of the portfolio for the nation. We are a company for the country and all of our net revenue profit goes to the Treasury for the benefit of the nation’s finances. This has totalled more than £4bn over the last ten years. Through our activities and investments, we create national environmental, social and financial value both for now and into the long term.

Balancing the needs of energy, food security, nature and coastal communities is important when thinking about the future of our seabed. Last week, we welcomed experts from the fisheries space for an in-depth and open discussion, providing an opportunity to build on collaborative partnerships and support the delivery of the best outcomes for the nation.   Collaboration on our data and evidence is vital in meeting our long-term ambitions for net zero, nature recovery and thriving communities. During the event, fisheries representatives gave their perspective to support the development of our Marine Delivery Routemap, a holistic and long-term view of how the seabed is used.

  • Yesterday we hosted a Parliamentary reception sponsored by Chair of Peers for the Planet Rt Hon Baroness Hayman to unveil our Nature Recovery Ambition update. With a keynote address from Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, the event was a great opportunity to bring together policymakers and experts from across a range of sectors to discuss the action we’re taking to deliver on our biodiversity goal.    At the reception we announced a number of measures to support these targets, including doubling the funding to support farmers in improving nature recovery through our Rural Environment Fund to £20m and restoring or creating 25 waterbodies and wetlands across the Windsor Estate by 2030 to provide wildlife rich habitats, as well as actions for marine & coastal and urban & built environments. We’ve set clear goals across out business to support nature recovery, and the targets published in today’s update demonstrate our commitment to being accountable. Meet our development partners for three housing demonstration projects that seek to find solutions to some of the UK’s #housing challenges. 🏡 🏗GS8 will deliver 50 net zero carbon homes in Wootton, Bedfordshire. Known for its award-winning, planet-positive developments, gs8 will pioneer regenerative development principles, including a market leading approach to carbon reduction and de-constructable homes for future reuse. 🏗TOWN. will oversee 80 homes at Westwick Row in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, adjacent to The Crown Estate's East Hemel site. The project will explore innovative community engagement methods and alternative housing models, including collaborative housing and intergenerational living. 🏗 igloo Regeneration will lead the development of 60 homes in Knutsford, Cheshire, exploring low-carbon infrastructure delivery and adopting a community-first approach to design and construction. The housing demonstration projects aim to address challenges such as the affordability crisis and how to implement #innovation in housing design, before passing on our learnings to the wider industry. By working with SMEs, we can explore new commercial models and building capacity for smaller developers to deliver sustainable housing at scale across the country, while exploring new building materials, construction methods and technologies.   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eev-FX4w #TheCrownEstate #Sustainability Image credits: Renderloft and GS8

  • Yesterday our LGBTQ+ employee network, Out on the Estate, partnered with Hammerson to host an event for older members of the LGBTQ+ community. This event provided an opportunity for people to socialise and have lunch, something that many have not had over the festive period. It was a great afternoon with people sharing their stories and experiences, as well as taking part in a quiz.   Becks Shaw Assoc. CIPD, one of the Chairs of the employee network, said, “Out on the Estate is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Our recent collaboration with Hammerson to host a community lunch for older LGBTQ+ individuals underscores the importance of creating spaces where everyone can connect, socialise, and find a sense of belonging. This outreach is especially meaningful as it allows us to give back to those who came before us and fought for a better, more equal world. In 2025, we're excited to look outward, and create opportunities to make a positive impact in our local community”   Daniel Kur, Commercial Partnerships Manager, said, “I used one of my volunteering days offered by The Crown Estate to join our LGBTQ+ employee group in hosting this event. It was so rewarding hearing some of the incredibly life stories, such as one couple soon to be celebrating their 50th anniversary, especially knowing that these types of events are the only social interactions they have. It was a heartwarming day that left me feeling truly inspired!”

❔ What are eco-moorings and why are they good for the marine environment?   Our Head of Nature and Environment for Marine, Caroline Price, joined Mairead Cahill in Studland Bay to discuss how the eco-moorings help to protect the seagrass habitats.   Working with The Studland Bay Marine Partnership, we have been focussed on finding a way for nature and people to thrive together, allowing the boating community to continue enjoying the beauty of Studland Bay whilst helping the seabed and marine environment to flourish. The eco-moorings allow boats to moor in the bay without needing to use traditional anchoring that can damage the seabed. This partnership forms part of our ambition for joined up action to restore nature. You can find out more about our nature goals and the action we are taking to deliver them in the updated report we’re launching next week.   You can learn more about the Studland Bay project, and the ‘Sea, Land and City’ film and initiative produced by Mairead and WONDEROOM which explores nature-positive solutions and stories in the UK, as one of the most nature depleted countries in the world: https://lnkd.in/gVAFXr8x National Trust WaterBear Network Seahorse Trust boatfolk
