Our marine environment holds huge potential to help deliver the clean energy transition, but a very busy seabed with increasing demand from a range of sectors means collaboration between different stakeholders will be key to our collective success.   To support the sustainable and co-ordinated management of our seabed, The Crown Estate and the North Sea Transition Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen data sharing between the two organisations, building on existing close collaboration around carbon capture and storage (CCS) and other marine industries.   This sharing of data will support the development of vital energy transition technologies such as CCS whilst considering other energy sectors.   This announcement follows the recent publication of our initial plans for a Marine Delivery Routemap, outlining an ambitious vision for how the UK’s seabed can continue to support the accelerated delivery of nature recovery and the transition to clean energy.   The Routemap details how The Crown Estate will work with partners and stakeholders to provide visibility and certainty for developers across a range of sectors, and intends to produce sector-specific updates to support their progress over the years ahead, including CCS, offshore wind, nature and others.   We look forward to work ever closer with the North Sea Transition Authority to accelerate the clean energy transition and the UK’s progress towards a net zero future!   Find out more about the Marine Delivery Routemap here: https://lnkd.in/eHSitm5h #CleanEnergy #EnergySecurity #EnergyTransition #CarbonCapture #CarbonCaptureAndStorage #CCS #Data

Across the UK, millions of people with physical and hidden disabilities face numerous challenges when accessing buildings and public spaces.   Currently one in four people in the UK are living with a disability with many more facing temporary mobility challenges. When combined with an aging population, it becomes clear that limited accessibility impacts a staggering portion of the population. The Crown Estate and Grosvenor, in conjunction with other major property owners, are urging the industry to unite in addressing this issue. We’ve published a joint report highlighting the need, barriers, benefits and recommendations for inclusive design in the built environment, and a range of open-source tools that businesses can implement to drive real, practical change. We have also founded a new working group – the Accessible and Inclusive Places Industry Group – to drive collaboration and change across the sector. Across land and sea, nature is under mounting pressure threatening the very ecosystems we all depend upon.   The Crown Estate’s diverse portfolio, spanning our seas, coastline, countryside, towns and cities, is home to thousands of species and vital habitats. We have the opportunity and responsibility to take a leading role in stewarding the natural environment to protect and enhance nature. This needs to be hand-in-hand with our focus on the transition to a net zero, energy secure future; creating inclusive communities; and responsibly generating a financial return for the nation.   Today, we are setting out our Nature Recovery Ambitions to support better joined-up action across land and sea to restore nature and create lasting benefits for people, climate and the environment. Carbon capture and storage (#CCS) is set to play a major role in the UK meeting its 2050 #NetZero emissions target, so it’s fantastic to award an Agreement for Lease to Eni for the first CCS project in the UK to repurpose existing pipeline infrastructure!   This is our second Track 1 CCS project awarded and first to reuse existing infrastructure, which will reduce both cost and the environmental impact of construction.   Eni’s innovative approach will see existing pipelines and platforms being repurposed to transport and store carbon dioxide from the HyNet industrial cluster for safe and permanent storage in depleted natural gas reservoirs under the seabed of the Irish Sea.   The Government has also announced today a £22bn funding boost over 25 years for this crucial technology, launching the UK’s first carbon capture industry, creating the opportunity for thousands of jobs and billions of private investment into the sector!   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eqD_fNqT #CarbonCapture #CarbonCaptureAndStorage

How can we generate 50% of the UK’s energy supply sustainably from the seabed by 2050? In partnership with Inversity, we challenged 50 tech-savvy individuals to propose #AI-powered software solutions to this ambitious and pressing question in a day-long #hackathon. Watch below to see what the hackathon meant for the participants and how it helped us nurture a diverse, skilled workforce the industry needs for a sustainable future. 

Understanding the physical nature of the seabed that we manage is essential to achieving our #NetZero and #NatureRecovery aims. #SeabedGeology interacts with so many offshore activities: everything from routing cables and locating new wind farms to protecting habitats and even mitigating climate change. We’ve partnered with British Geological Survey on a major project to develop new national-scale seabed geology data for use by The Crown Estate as well as developers, researchers and others. The first step in that process is to gather as much input as possible in terms of different stakeholders’ needs.
