À propos
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is a community of 149 Member States that work together to observe, understand and manage the shared marine environment that unites us all. The deep ocean may be the last frontier of the planet but, for over half a century, the ocean has also played a leading role in building greater international cooperation. Since it was first formed in 1960 the work of the IOC has evolved from the technological optimism of the space age to the more recent challenges posed by climate change and the increasing demands of a rapidly expanding human population. The cumulative threats posed by warming sea temperatures, ocean acidification and pollution have created an even more urgent need for the critical services provided by the IOC. The ocean provides about half of the oxygen we breathe and it directly supports the livelihoods of about 500 million people, especially in the poorest nations. For many of these nations, ocean-related economic activities such as tourism and artisanal fisheries support up to 30% of national economies. For over 50 years the IOC has worked behind the scenes to enable its Member States to work together to strengthen our scientific understanding of the ocean for the benefit of humanity. However, in recent years, there has been a growing need to highlight the unique intergovernmental value that it provides for Member States, the IOC community, the ocean environment and wider society.

📢 Just published: The report "Ambition, Action, Impact: the Ocean Decade Pathway to 2030 - Consolidated Outcomes of the Vision 2030 Process" identifies science, knowledge, capacity, resources, and infrastructure priorities that are needed to achieve a successful Ocean Decade. The #OceanDecade aims to transform the way that ocean science and knowledge is generated and used, and thus precipitate a shift from the ocean we have to the ocean we want by 2030. The Vision 2030 process, implemented over a period of twelve months in the lead-up to the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, was centred around the ten Ocean Decade Challenges – which represent the most immediate and pressing needs for ocean knowledge – as a participatory and iterative process aimed at setting a tailored and specific strategic ambition, or ‘end goal’, and associated milestones for each Challenge. ➡️ Launched at the #AAORIAForum2024 this week, this report summarises the key findings and outcomes of this process, and outlines a pathway to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want by 2030. Download it here: https://ow.ly/CiKM50TIQ2G 🤝 We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Vision 2030 Working Group members for their invaluable contributions to this important Ocean Decade process

🌊 Today was #StakeholdersDay! The participants of the #MSPforum were divided into groups and invited to field trips around Nusa Dua (Bali) to visit local stakeholders and to understand their needs, concerns, synergies and roles in MSP. 🌱 At the Mangrove Information Center discussions revolved around mangrove forest management and its social benefits. 🪸 Another group got to observe ornamental fish and corals - from harvesting to packaging and export processes. 🐢 The guides from the Turtle Conservation and Education Center explained the rehabilitation process of turtles and how the analysis of nesting sites is used to assess space suitability in the MSP process, particularly for determining locations for turtle conservation. ⚓ The fourth group visited the Benoa Integrated Port which includes facilities serving logistics, cold storage, fish processing, navigation, security, health, energy, and tourism according to the #MSP of Bali Province. 🎊 In celebration of Indonesia’s support to #MarineConservation and the #SustainableBlueEconomy, the day ended with a special ceremony to release turtles.
