This week, I had the pleasure of attending Groundsure's Women in Property event, where Jess Lewis née Fallowes from Stephens Scown led an insightful discussion on the current housing crisis. Over a classic cream tea, great conversations unfolded, exploring solutions to one of the sector’s biggest challenges 🏡 🍰 Brooks Estates Ltd was proud to be acknowledged for advocating reform in the rental sector and increased regulation of landlords—key factors in helping to create a fairer and more sustainable housing market. A significant step forward in this space is the Freehold and Leasehold Reform Act 2024; this legislation will bring greater transparency to service charges, improve the provision of sales packages, and introduce other essential reforms to benefit homeowners and tenants alike. We had an amazing time speaking at the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce event this week! 🎤🌱 Rain Brooks, MD, and Ellie Tswei, Property Manager, took to the stage to share more about Brooks Estates, our commitment to sustainability, and how we integrate it into both our business practices and mindset to empower our team and community. MEET THE TEAM 🌱 Meet Rain Brooks - our founder and MD. Rain not only manages the business, she also delivers training, encouragement and an indecent amount of biscuits to our a growing team. All whilst studying to become chartered and raising (read: refereeing) her twins as a single parent. She is almost as passionate about the environment as she is about empowering her staff and aiding them to carve out successful careers. With 20 years of asset management experience, Rain is a fountain of property and investment knowledge. When not reciting the LTA 1954 from memory, Rain is usually advising clients on their asset performance strategy, giving talks around female empowerment or onboarding new sites across the South West. With acute attention to detail, even when immersed in an office of five loud, chaotic women, Adam not only brings an unmatched level of organised, number crunching mastery, he also has the most epic Friday playlist any office has ever heard. MEET THE TEAM 🌱 Meet Annabel Baker - our head of property for the Devon office. Our wonderful property manager from 'across the border' Annabel oversees all of the Brooks Estates sites throughout the county. With a vision to bring housing to the most vulnerable sector of society, a planning degree and a registered nursing career behind her, she jumped straight into the deep end of property management and has swam absolute lengths. Onboarding multiple new sites and demonstrating immeasurable capability across the board with a variety of clients, Annabel embodies the high standards of management you can expect from our agency and makes it look effortless. We are hooked on her Waitrose choccy almonds and infectious energy. MEET THE TEAM 🌱 Meet Kirsty Baxter (ACILEx) - our head of legal. The conveyancing queen who spins all of the legal plates, from Land Registry applications and leaseholder safety updates to turning around management packs in just 48 hours from the Brooks Estates offices. Offering staff wellbeing support to the office, essentially ensuring we all keep our heads, whilst she also tends to her family through her 100% remote working arrangement. Kirsty continues her growth whilst studying a degree and multiple other courses. You may see Kirsty attending networking events or remote meetings with her EA, Chloe, aged 1... A woman with many hats, many qualities and pure drive. Claire is our number crunching extraordinaire, with the patience of a saint, who is capable of overseeing hundreds of accounts and herding financial cats every month. She has single handedly corrected many sets of confused accounts, put financial management strategies in place and brought everything into streamlined order. A real life swan woman, with every ounce of grace on the surface and whilst also running a family and studying a degree. MEET THE TEAM 🌱 Meet Ellie Tswei - our head of property for the Cornwall office. Ellie oversees the management of all sites throughout Cornwall, using her background in facilities management and site security to ensure effective compliance, maintenance and budgeting practises are applied. This year Ellie has shown such a huge amount of pride and ambition in her service delivery. She has dealt with the onboarding of a huge number of new sites and has maintained high standards of service and commitment to existing clients, administering our strategic management procedures and assisting with the training of new members of staff - all whilst studying herself! The woman who puts 36 hours worth of work into 12 and makes it look easy. MEET THE TEAM 🌱 Meet Flora Tswei - our assistant ecologist. Flora heads up our ecological arm; training and supporting our grounds maintenance teams to ensure BNG performance, evaluating the green and blue landscape management, monitoring and delivering habitat improvement and overseeing our community engagement. This year Flora has achieved our solar energy grant, delivered our carbon report and ambitions, and hosted numerous engagement events where she has brought immeasurable community spirit and benefit. All whilst working towards a degree, no biggie 👏🏼 She is just an allround energetic, committed beautiful soul.
