We are delighted to announce that Cornwall Wildlife Trust has received £265,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for our ambitious new project - Tor to Shore. The project will create a thriving land and seascape rich in wildlife, connecting the granite rocks on Helman Tor, our biggest nature reserve, to the spectacular waters of St Austell Bay, home to important seagrass and maerl habitats. At the heart of our ambitions for the area are plans to bring together people and communities from all backgrounds to act for, connect with, and benefit from nature. Huge thanks to #NationalLottery players! #HeritageFund @HeritageFundUK Read more here: https://buff.ly/3SrpZBl

Trick or treat? The frightening reality of the updated IUCN red list… ⚠️ Trees are now on the extinction red list. The number of threatened trees now outweighs ALL threatened birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians put together. Conservationists have also warned of rapid declines in the number of hedgehogs and migratory birds. Hedgehogs are now listed as ‘near threatened’ after a decline in numbers of at least 30% over the past decade, and four of the UK's shorebirds have also moved to higher risk categories. There are no tricks here, the evidence is clear. Plummeting populations signal that nature is in crisis. Read the full article and find out how you can help: https://buff.ly/3YVAv7X

The UK government has confirmed it will maintain their previous commitment to ban disposable vapes in England and Wales, with the changes coming into effect from 1st June 2025. This move is vital for our environment. Disposable vapes create an enormous amount of hazardous waste and are almost impossible to recycle. It’s thought that disposable vapes were responsible for around 40 tonnes of lithium waste each year so this is a huge campaign win! ♻️ 📷 Dr Rebecca Wade

I had the pleasure of spending this morning with our amazing membership recruitment team, exploring the incredible work of beavers 🦫 and witnessing how they’ve transformed the landscape at Woodland Valley Farm. Their natural engineering is not only creating new habitats but also enhancing ecosystems for both wildlife and people. 🌳💧 A huge thank you to Tom Shelley for the fascinating tour and for highlighting the importance of this conservation effort! With a new UK Government now in place, commitments to clean up our water supply and restore our rivers and seas must be prioritised. We have been calling on the UK Government to halve water pollution; fund our regulators to enforce the law; and protect rare chalk streams from development. If you can travel, join us in London, for a peaceful march organised by River Action - March for Clean Water - marking 100 days of the new Labour government on Sunday 3rd November. 👉 If you're interested in learning more about water here in Cornwall, then check out our recent episode on the Wild Cornwall podcast! Covering pollution, flooding and climate resilience, we chat to Jade Neville, Catchment Partnership Officer for Cornwall Wildlife Trust, and Simon Jeffery, Senior Advisor for Cornwall for Flood and Coastal Risk Management at the Environment Agency. Find it on our website, Spotify or Apple.

Proper muddy boots marine restoration. It's all graft and no glamour. Here's Matt and Chloe—part of the brilliant Cornwall Wildlife Trust marine team—sowing intertidal seagrass seeds today in some pretty terrible weather. We are now 1000 seeds for the better at our new Helford site. Muddy content like this can never compete aesthetically with azure blue drone shots of breaching megafauna. But it matters at least as much and, without wanting to throw shade on our wonderful megafauna, it probably matters more. Thanks to Seasalt for having the gumption to fund this important restoration work. We have ambitions to upscale this approach in the coming years. I'm looking forward to seeing how much we can do.

What a delight it was to announce the winners of our 2024 Cornish Wildlife Photography Competition last night, at the wonderful venue of Truro Cathedral. Our brilliant sponsors joined us to either present awards, alongside our chair Oliver Blount, in each of the six categories or to collect them in the winners absence. Our huge thanks to them all for making the awards possible, and to our judges for doing the hard yards in selecting our worthy winners. In an evening hosted by our CEO matt walpole, we had speeches rousing us to do bigger, better and bolder for wildlife, from our Director of Nature and People, Cheryl Marriott, and encouragement to get better acquainted with the world underwater, from Marine Conservation Officer Matt Slater. You can find out more about the evenings winners over on our website, plus cast your vote in our 'People's Choice Award' - your chance to pick your favourite from the 30 finalists. And... The exhibition is now open everyday until the 13th November at Truro cathedral, so do go and visit. https://lnkd.in/eQd8eEAb
