🚢 💧 Throughout 2024, ENGINE has been closely monitoring the impact of the EU ETS on the affordability of conventional versus alternative fuels. Our analysis shows that, on its own, the EU ETS has not been enough to drive widespread fuel switching in the maritime sector. Today, at ARACON, our Managing Editor Erik Hoffmann joined a panel discussion where he and other industry leaders highlighted the potential of the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation. The Royal Institution of Naval Architects Wind Propulsion Conference brought together key industry experts at a time when maritime wind technology is on the cusp of entering the mainstream. The conference saw key speakers making the case for a range of propulsion methods. Including speeches from Gavin Allwright, Lars Robert Pedersen of BIMCO and Roel Hoenders from the IMO on the importance of decarbonisation for the maritime sector. Key speakers included Simon Schofield from BAR Technologies, Hapag-Lloyd AG as well as DNV and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). As the maritime industry seeks to find alternatives to traditional fossil fuels wind propulsion looks to be an increasingly interesting prospect. As Gavin Allwright put it in his opening address to the assembled delegates, for wind power 'this is the time.'
