    Connecting the App Industry

    Is a wave of private equity investment coming to apps? A new report from OC&C Strategy Consultants on “Investing in Consumer Apps - The Next Hotpots for Growth” sets out the opportunity .... According to the authors Laura Gibb and Zee Ashraf: “A new cohort of lifestyle and content apps is emerging and increasingly hitting ‘PE scale’, or with markers that they will … Favourable dynamics – including intersections with mega-trends – are likely to support growth” Some of the value drivers they cover include: 📈 310m US smartphone users  🤑 Non-gaming in-app payments have reached $64bn  📱 Smartphones are the go-to for daily activities with 60% of UK users using them for banking for example (up from 26% in 2018 They highlight apps with significant scale in users and revenue including many that attend or speak at our App Promotion Summit series of events or subscribe to our Business of Apps media platform including: - Health & Wellness: Flo, Weward, MyFitness Pal, Clue Gismart - Learning: Duolingo: Brainly, Babbel, Buusu, Memrise - Fitness and Outdoors: Strava, Justfit, AllTrails There's some good analysis of how apps can monetize via subscriptions, ecommerce and ads and the threat (or not) of disruption from Apple's in-house app portfolio. There are many apps with great concepts, but they fall short due to friction, unresponsiveness, or a lack of simplicity. This friction can override the user’s desire to solve a problem, leading to app uninstalls. There’s definitely an opportunity to integrate more AI into app development and optimization, creating smoother, more modern experiences, particularly for a Gen Z audience. This would also help give products a fair chance to determine if they have product-market fit."
