About us
Cambridge combines a rich history with the vibrancy and prosperity of outstanding educational institutions and modern businesses. It is an inspiring and attractive place in which to live and work. It is at the heart of a buoyant sub-region which is an area designated for major growth in employment and housing. The Council is committed to supporting the sustainable growth of the City in housing, jobs and community infrastructure. This growth has to respect our climate change policies. The City Council believes the community as a whole and every person in it matters. We are planning for future growth that preserves the City’s best qualities, sustains its environmental, social and economic fabric and is supported by a first class transport infrastructure. Although Cambridge is a prosperous place, many people on low incomes face the challenge of high living costs, particularly for housing. The Council is committed to sharing the prosperity of economic growth in Cambridge fairly across the city and its communities. The City of Cambridge is in the east of England, 50 miles north of London. A beautiful place to live and work, Cambridge is an historic University City and market town with high quality architecture and attractive open spaces. It is also a city of national importance, being a world leader in higher education and many 21st century industries – information technology, telecommunications and commercial research, particularly the biotechnology sector. The population of Cambridge is over 125,000. This is forecast to increase to 151,800 in 2031 as a result of new developments. The Council is working in partnership with other local Councils and external organisations to manage the planning for 47,500 new homes in the county by 2016. This has major implications for the way that the City Council delivers its services in the future.

🌳 We've been working with local communities during March on a number of tree planting initiatives 🌲🌳 Friends of St Matthew’s Piece supported the planting of 12 fruit trees, funded as one of our Environmental Improvement Projects. The orchard will join a small growing network of similar projects across Abbey which will be managed under the stewardship of Abbey in Cambridge 🌲🌳 And in King's Hedges people came out to help with the planting of 1,000 trees around Nuns Way recreation ground, to start the formation of a Miyawaki type microwood

🌳🏠 Greater Cambridge will once again enjoy full protection from unplanned and inappropriate development 🏘️ A new report shows there is once again enough land in Greater Cambridge to meet a key planning benchmark - a 'five-year housing land supply' 🏠 This follows recent changes by the Government which resulted in our Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service acknowledging that planning decisions could be impacted by national requirements to give greater emphasis in favour of approving new homes 🏡 However, as a result of this ‘housing land supply’ being restored to above five years, planning applications will again be assessed against all the councils’ local policies – which include a clear plan for where homes should be built - as well as those set nationally Read more: https://lnkd.in/e3VWM_6p

Between January & February 2025, our multi-award winning Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Youth Engagement Service YES facilitated several excellent youth engagement workshops to support the Cambridge Neighbourhoods Design Code Public Consultation, involving over 170 children, young people, & 50 parents from two primary schools & one secondary school in the North Cambridge area. These YES workshops took place during the formal public consultation for the Cambridge Neighbourhoods Design Code. Working with Cambridge City Council & Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects, this Design Code aims to provide strategic guidance to shape the future of #Arbury, #KingsHedges and #WestChesterton. Funded by the MHCLG, this pilot project focuses resources to work with communities and neighbourhoods with the most need, helping raise design standards & tackle inequality. Children & young people from the Kings Hedges Education Federation, Mayfield Primary School & the North Cambridge Academy took part in the YES workshops to learn about the emerging Code, and took part in a series of design workshops to express their views on the Code. They took part in a walkabout to explore the Arbury area & to share their place knowledge, a photo study to express their place feelings. They also developed skills in placemaking & learnt about the different career options in the built & natural environment fields. The YES workshops were well received and helped generate quantitative and qualitative data to inform the Design Code. Following public consultation, the GCSP team intends for the Cambridge Neighbourhoods Design Code to be formally adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document in Spring 2025. This formal consultation has followed a robust programme of community engagement in 2023 & 2024, including in person drop-in events at the Meadows Centre, online webinars and a YES workshop with 60 students from the Grove Primary School. The YES Team comprises a team of youth engagement practitioners who are also experts in urban design, town planning, architecture and public art. We support developers and communities in the youth engagement process, ensuring children & young people have a meaningful input into the development, planning policy and public art process. We provide tailor-made services nationally. We would like to thank Trovine Monteiro MBA MAUD B.Arch CMgr FCMI FRSA, Dr. Bonnie Kwok MBE CMgr FCMI FRSA, Tom Davies MRTPI FRSA, Alexis Butterfield for leading the YES workshops, & thank Heather Jones FCIOB FCABE FInstLM AIFireE FRSA & Jane Green for championing our work & Katie H. from Anglia Ruskin University for supporting our team with data collection & analysis, & the support of Kings Hedges Cllrs Jenny Gawthrope Wood & Katie Thornburrow. 🏡 With Cambridge Investment Partnership we're starting to build 423 homes this spring 🏡 We broke ground at East Barnwell today, where we'll be building 120 new council homes alongside new community facilities 📷 1 and 2 🏡 Work has also recently started at Fanshawe Road, where 84 new homes are being built to replace 30 ageing properties. 45 will be council homes and 39 will be market sale homes. (Any profit from selling these homes is reinvested into building more new council homes and community facilities) 📷 3 🏡 In the next few months we'll be starting on site at ATS Murketts, where we'll build 70 new homes, including 28 council homes and 42 for sale 📷 4 Read more about all of these schemes via link in bio to 'latest news' 🏡 And we're also starting work soon at Newbury Farm, where we'll be delivering 150 homes, including 60 council homes 📷 5

🖊️ Council leaders across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have sent a letter to the Minister of State for Local Government and English Devolution setting out progress on plans to move towards a new system of local government 💬 “In recent weeks, we have been working closely together to understand the differing perspectives of each authority and to consider the various unitary scenarios. “Further work will take place, at pace, after the county council and mayoral elections to reach a shared understanding of how best to progress our proposals. The scenarios we are considering will take account of historic community identities, the interests of residents, economic geographies, and local demographic representation." 🖊️ The letter has been signed by our Leader Cllr Mike Davey alongside the leaders of Cambridgeshire County Council, Peterborough City Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council 📱 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ee--hu5i

📢 Exciting News: Supporting Our Frontline Staff with TRiM Training! 💙 At Jimmy’s Cambridge, we know that working in the homelessness and rough sleeping sector comes with its challenges. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Cambridge City Council to provide Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) training to key staff members. Originally developed in the military, TRiM is a structured system designed to help staff identify and support those affected by trauma. This initiative will strengthen resilience within frontline teams, ensuring they can continue their incredible work while maintaining their own wellbeing. 🚑 The nature of this work means facing difficult situations, and sadly, loss is a reality for many in this sector. With life expectancy significantly lower for those experiencing homelessness (45 for men, 43 for women), support staff often develop long-term relationships with individuals they help—making these losses especially tough. 🎯 A collaborative effort: Thanks to the support of Cambridge City Council, this training will be rolled out across the city, ensuring TRiM-trained practitioners are available at Jimmy’s Cambridge, Cambridge City Council, Riverside and Cyrenians . 🫂 Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient sector—because those who care for others deserve care too. #jimmyscambridge #TRiMtraining #Supportingourstaff #homelessnesssupport #mentalwellbeing #cambridge #traumainformed #traumainformedcare #keyworkers
