Families from across the UK returned to Westminster on Tuesday 5 November, clutching photos of their loved ones, along with stories and testimonies from dozens of patients who say they are thriving thanks to cannabis-based medicines. They were there, as they have been every year since the law changed in 2018, to call on MPs to address the barriers preventing them from accessing these treatments on the NHS. It comes as new figures highlight the lack of prescribing of both unlicensed and licensed cannabis medicines, including Epidiolex and Sativex, in the NHS. https://lnkd.in/e4fka2k4

Ireland’s Oireachtas Joint Committee on Drugs Use has issued an interim report endorsing the decriminalization of all substances for personal use, aligned with recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly on Drugs Use. Key proposals include a health-focused, non-punitive approach, nonprofit cannabis social clubs, and broader medical cannabis access. Six years after the legalisation of medical cannabis in the UK, private prescriptions have increased significantly, with a 118% rise in unlicensed cannabis-based medicines between 2021 and 2023. Despite 35,000 patients now holding prescriptions, broader awareness among healthcare professionals and the public remains limited. Prescribing medical cannabis for chronic pain could save the NHS almost £4 billion annually, according to new research. In the UK, researchers say they are working to get two long-awaited NHS clinical trials underway to investigate the role of cannabis-based medicines in severe forms of epilepsy. The first significant update on the trials—first promised in 2019 following a government review—comes almost six years on from the legalisation of medical cannabis in the UK. Led by researchers at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH), the studies are expected to begin recruiting 500 patients in 2025.
