Six years after the legalisation of medical cannabis in the UK, private prescriptions have increased significantly, with a 118% rise in unlicensed cannabis-based medicines between 2021 and 2023. Despite 35,000 patients now holding prescriptions, broader awareness among healthcare professionals and the public remains limited. While patient numbers are growing, the sector still faces a major knowledge gap. In the UK, researchers say they are working to get two long-awaited NHS clinical trials underway to investigate the role of cannabis-based medicines in severe forms of epilepsy. The first significant update on the trials—first promised in 2019 following a government review—comes almost six years on from the legalisation of medical cannabis in the UK. Led by researchers at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH), the studies are expected to begin recruiting 500 patients in 2025. The THC-based drug #dronabinol has been shown to reduce agitation in Alzheimer’s patients without adverse effects. Researchers have shown that a pill form of the drug dronabinol, an FDA-approved synthetic version of THC, reduces agitation in patients with Alzheimer’s by an average of 30%. The researchers say that compared to current treatments for agitation, such as antipsychotics, dronabinol produced similar calming effects without adverse results such as #delirium or #seizures. #Alzheimer’s disease is the most common #neurodegenerative disease in the United States, with an estimated 6.7 million cases in Americans age 65 and older, according to the National Institutes of Health. This number is predicted to grow to 13.8 million by 2060. https://lnkd.in/e9cpzhfF

On Monday 30 September, the Ministry of Health published a draft royal decree for public hearing, setting out the proposed regulations for the prescription of cannabis-based medicines. After years of campaigning for access to safe and legal cannabis medicines, patients have been critical of how restrictive the proposed regulations are. “They have made it so restrictive… I think this is a mistake,” Carola Pérez, president of the Spanish Observatory of Medicinal Cannabis [Observatorio Español del Cannabis Medicinal, OECM] which celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, tells Cannabis Health. https://lnkd.in/epk9TKmi
