Proudly providing services to 150,000 residents living in Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay and the surrounding villages

About us

Canterbury City Council is the district council for Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and 24 surrounding villages. Looking after the local area and the people who make it special is at the heart of what we do, delivering more than 70 services to residents, businesses and visitors. The council is formed of 39 councillors, who are elected by local residents to represent them in making decisions about how the district is governed. Councillors work closely with council staff to implement those decisions and deliver services. Services include waste collection, planning, housing, culture and leisure facilities, open spaces, parking, street cleaning and regulatory functions such as environmental health, licensing, council tax and business rate collection. Kent County Council delivers some services to our district and these are education, highways, social services, recycling centres and libraries. Kent Police and the Fire and Rescue Service work with us in partnerships such as the Community Safety Unit who deal with anti-social behaviour and crime prevention. Council services can be accessed online at canterbury.gov.uk. Interested in working for us? See our latest vacancies at canterbury,gov.uk/jobs. • ⛵️ Maintaining Herne Bay Memorial Park’s boating lake Routine work to clean the boating lake in Herne Bay Memorial Park is set to begin tomorrow (14 February). The lake’s water level will be slightly lowered to help with the removal of silt and will return to normal once the works are completed. To do this, a tanker will be used to clean and filter the water, remove the sludge and pump the clean water back in. The tanker will be parked in Dering Road. But don’t worry, by only draining some of the water, the terrapins inhabiting the lake will be left undisturbed. Any waste removed, such as branches or tyres, will be left at the side of the lake for 24 hours to allow any wildlife accidentally removed with the waste to return to the water. The waste will then be removed by the contractor. Coppicing to tidy up the island will be undertaken as well as a new platform being built into the lake. The new platform is set to be installed on the southerly side and will protrude 3.9 meters into the water. It is intended to be used by the model boating club to control their boats and will also include a bespoke etched panel featuring some of the significant infrastructure and wildlife found in the park. We expect everything to be completed by Friday 21 February.

  • 🚗💨 Sensors signal city’s progress in improving air quality Sensors measuring Canterbury’s air quality in real time have been installed around the city. Designed to help people understand the risks they face from pollution, the project has been paid for by the Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and forms part of a wider initiative with the Kent and Medway Air Quality Partnership. Sensors monitor levels of harmful gases produced by petrol and diesel vehicles such as nitrogen dioxide and particulates, and have been installed at the city’s congestion hotspots, including: 📍 St Dunstan’s Street 📍 Military Road 📍 Broad Street 📍 New Dover Road 📍 Wincheap The data can be accessed in map-form on the Kent Air website, with each sensor displaying the current pollution level according to an index between one and ten, which is divided into four bands: low, moderate, high or very high. You can then decide whether you need to take a different route to school, work or for other day-to-day activities. The sensors will also help track longer-term trends in air quality to help better understand local air quality issues. 💬 Cllr Mel Dawkins, Canterbury City Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change, said: “It may be a cliche, but knowledge really is power. 💬 “The more people understand the pollution risks they face, the more they can do to either avoid them or work together to tackle them. 💬 “The district’s air quality is improving and our latest Air Quality Action Plan, which I will ask Cabinet to approve in the coming weeks, is designed to keep up the momentum and build on the successes we have had so far.” Head to the link in the comments to read the full story.

  • Court orders graffiti vandal to pay more than £1,500 William King, 20, of Weyburn Drive, Ramsgate, was yesterday (Tuesday 19 November) found guilty in his absence of tagging five different locations across Canterbury. Folkestone Magistrates’ Court was told that King was caught on CCTV cameras in April tagging the Grade I-listed Fyndon’s Gate which forms part of St Augustine’s Abbey. The same man was also believed to have graffitied Canterbury Magistrates’ Court and the King Ethelbert statue in Lady Wootton’s Green. Canterbury City Council’s Environmental Crime and Graffiti Officers opened an investigation and traced him to an address in Canterbury. In an interview, King admitted that he was responsible for five tags all of which breached the council’s Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). King was fined £120 for each instance of graffiti, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £240 and costs of £200. He was also ordered to pay £517.90 in compensation for cleaning costs. Cllr Connie Nolan, the council’s Cabinet Member for Community Engagement, Safety and Enforcement, said: “Tagging is simply vandalism by another name and affects everyone’s quality of life by making a beautiful city like Canterbury look horrible and grimy. “I am pleased our investigation tracked down the culprit and they have been punished. “Let that be a lesson to other taggers out there – we will find you and we will prosecute you.” So far this year, the council’s team has cleaned off more than 5,703 pieces of graffiti.
