On the 5th anniversary of Eurostar services stopping due to the Covid pandemic in March 2020, local business leaders and politicians have joined forces to describe why the return of services is vital. A campaign group, which comprises key voices from the public and private sector, including Ashford Borough Council, Dartford Borough Council, Kent County Council, Bring Back Euro Trains, Kent and Medway Economic Partnership, Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, Locate in Kent, and Visit Kent as well as prominent voices in the local community and wider Kent business community have been campaigning since they stopped in 2020, which Eurostar originally blamed on a combination of financial concerns and post-Brexit red tape. In an exclusive video produced by local filming company Square Stone Media, various contributors explain the impact it has had on the local economy. They also talk about how they hope government support for their return will see a reversal of the decision which will lead to a positive turn in fortunes for Ashford, Ebbsfleet, Kent and the wider southeast region. The show must go on! Council extends The Ashford Cinema contract Ashford’s popular town centre cinema is going to continue under the same management team, which has seen The Ashford Cinema become a firm favourite - meaning film lovers, families and local community groups can continue enjoying the latest blockbuster hits and meeting friends for a drink or bite to eat. The news comes after Ashford Borough Council agreed to extend the current contract, which has seen a change in fortunes to the entertainment hub, based at Elwick Place. The Ashford Cinema has established itself as the local community cinema and event space. It is providing affordable and accessible entertainment offers to local residents, whilst also delivering a growing range of community events and activities. In addition, it is an ideal venue for corporate events, thanks to the fabulous facilities that are on offer and the nature of its location. Our grant of £50,000 from the Coronation Living Heritage Fund (CLHF) has allowed 545 fruit trees, including apples, pears, cherries and plums, from a local family-run nursery, to be planted across the borough to create or expand community orchards. We invited parish and community councils to apply for fruit trees, whilst also creating or extending existing community orchards on areas of our own open spaces. This has resulted in trees being planted across the borough in various locations. These community orchards have been created for the benefit of their local communities who are welcome to enjoy to fruit they will provide over the coming years. Planting took place over January and February and was made possible with the help of a number of volunteers from local groups such as Willesborough WI, The Amber Foundation, children from Ashford Oaks primary school and lots of local residents who came along to take part. Younger visitors to Ashford Town Centre will soon be able to get on board a new dedicated play space, as The Supersonic Ashford Express arrives in the town centre this month. The project will see the creation of a fun, attractive space for young children and families to enjoy in town. The type and style of the play equipment has been chosen with sustainability in mind as well as considering things like maintenance, damage and anti-social behaviour in the design process. It has also been designed with accessibility and access for children of all abilities. The works are being undertaken by KOMPAN Global, who installed the large bespoke playground at the Ashford Designer Outlet and many more around the borough. They were also behind the temporary gym equipment which they supplied in the town centre free of charge. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eUjvZrYv

This news might seem like a small thing to many people, but it's an important part of my work as a local councillor - making sure the area I represent gets improvements and resources that make the lives of residents better where at all possible. So I'm pleased to share that the first phase of improvements to the Rectory Way play area (off Beecholme Drive near Gerlach House), in Bockhanger, north Ashford, has now been completed. This £77,000 project, funded through Section 106 money, is aimed to revitalise this important play area and space that's really important for the community and local families. Often these things take a long time to secure and deliver but it's very much worth the effort and work in the background to make sure they do happen. The best part will be seeing this new improved play area being enjoyed by local kids and families. Further enhancements are planned for the new financial year to further spruce up the site. Thanks again to all the Ashford Borough Council officers involved for their hard work on this project.
