Micro domestic greywater reuse is one solution to accelerate. Watch the video in their link. #sustainability #proptech #watertech #climatetech
The demand of freshwater is expected to outstrip supply as early as 2030. This poses challenges for both global society and the environment. The BBC discussed the global water availability challenge with BSI CEO Susan Taylor Martin to understand the causes of water stress and the opportunities for global collaboration to overcome it. Learn more in our research with leading water NGO Waterwise, Thirst for change, as we explore different approaches to water management, provide key insights on water availability and set out steps to take for positive change: https://lnkd.in/eUHK73-x #Water #Watersecurity #Wateravailability #Waterstress #Sustainability

Water Positive | Innovation Advisory Committee Member at MOSL | Delivering Sustainable Water Solutions
Thrilled to have joined George and Vikki in this water reuse workshop. This is a crucial piece of the puzzle to increase the UK's water resilience.
Last week, the Enabling Water Smart Communities project team hosted a workshop with water companies to propose a way forward for implementing dual pipe water systems in new housing developments - allowing recycling of rainwater and greywater for things like toilet flushing, gardening and equipment washing. The workshop was in anticipation of positive action by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to resolve regulatory issues around supplying recycled non-potable water to homes. Historically, water companies were able to implement dual pipe water reuse schemes, such as at the Olympic Park in London, and Eddington in northwest Cambridge. But currently companies are unable to implement such schemes, due to interpretation of the definition of “wholesomeness” of water in the Water Industry Act. Marcus Rink, Chief Inspector Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) acknowledges these regulatory issues, stating in a letter to Ministers, "There is a need to consider water supply innovation together with water resource solutions, such as recycling and grey water reuse which current regulations do not fully consider." Our workshop included representatives from multiple departments within Anglian Water Services, Thames Water, United Utilities, Affinity Water and Southern Water. We began by developing an operational roadmap for the delivery of community-scale water reuse. This included the consideration and sequencing of activities necessary to resolve the challenges around delivering dual pipe systems. A big thank you to all those who attended and provided exceptionally insightful input. And to Arup for hosting us in their wonderful London offices! Work is now underway to write up the findings and create a 'Reuse Roadmap', to be published on the EWSC website this autumn, so watch this space...

Waterwise Policy Asks of the New Government - July 2024 We face a water deficit of at least 4800 million litres per day (Mld) if we want to have a healthy environment, secure water supplies and future growth. Over 50% of this deficit needs to be met by reducing our water demand with at least 1000 Mld relying on new government policy. Today Waterwise set out its top 6 water saving policy priorities for the new government – together they have potential to reduce water use by more than 2000 Mld: - Deliver the UK mandatory water efficiency label making it easy for people and businesses to choose more water efficient products - Urgently increase water saving ambition in Building Regulations for new development - Support the planned smart water meter roll-out in England - Update the Energy Performance Certificate to include water efficiency - Require very high water using businesses to report on their efforts to reduce water use - Require all buildings to be fitted with leak detection Read Waterwise full Policy Asks Document here

Seawater intrusion is the movement of saline water from the ocean into freshwater systems. The seawater that has crept up the Mississippi River in the summer and early fall of 2023 is a reminder that coastal communities teeter in a fragile land-sea balance. Fresh water is essential for drinking, irrigation and healthy ecosystems. When seawater moves inland, the salt it contains can wreak havoc on farmlands, ecosystems, lives and livelihoods. #seawater #water #desalination

A big thank you to the Institute of Water and Energy Systems Catapult for organising the Net Zero in Water event yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed the presentations and positive buzz in the room. We often find ourselves stuck in our own little bubble, too busy to learn what others are doing toward achieving net zero in water, so this was a great opportunity to see and hear first-hand all the great work the water sector is doing. Thanks to Evan Joanette, Ayisha Khurshid MIWater and Richard Halsey. Great to also catch up with Jo Osborn, Chart.PR, MCIPR, Lina Nieto, Sarah Castelvecchi and Peter Vale. #water #innovation #collaboration #sharing #insights #decarbonisation #netzero #shower

Scaling regenerative agriculture in Europe with Climate Farmers. Co-founder of Love Foundation, VCA NL & Hug Records. TED Countdown & BMW Responsible Leader. Studying regenerative culture & regenerative leadership.
Europe is running out of water. The Under the Surface project, coordinated by Arena for Journalism in Europe and initiated by Datadista, delved into official data from European countries to reveal last month, for the first time, the extent of the danger we face. Altogether, 14 journalists from seven countries analysed the most up-to-date EU figures and created an interactive map of Europe’s aquifers. The conclusion is that our water is disappearing and what remains is facing near-irreversible pollution. Over 15% of the aquifers mapped are already in poor condition — dangerously overexploited, contaminated or both. Spain is one of the worst countries in Europe with 27% of its groundwater resources being overexploited. It is one of the drivers for regenerative agriculture that we see at Climate Farmers. Through regenerative agriculture, we can: 1. Improve soil structure and infiltration, which increases groundwater levels 2. Increase soil organic matter, which increases soil water storage capacity and the possibility of soaking up water when it rains 3. Enhance root systems, which create channels for the water to flow through, again, increasing groundwater reserves. At the same time, 54 billion euros go annually through the CAP to support farming practices that destroy soil health, decrease soil organic matter and impair root systems. How is that possible? We need policy and government support for farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture. It is the only way we can avoid a food and water crisis in Europe. We have all seen what happened when people thought they couldn't buy toilet paper the next day. Let's hope we never get to experience what happens when people don't know if they will have next-day access to drinking water in Europe. Find a picture taken from the report below, thanks to Ananya Manna for showing it to me. I will leave a link to the whole report in the comments. #regenerativeagriculture #policychange #watercrisis

Globally, around 4 billion people — 50% of the world’s population — are exposed to extremely high #WaterStress at least one month a year. By 2050, that number could be closer to 60%💧📈 💭What’s causing global water stress? Across the world, demand for water is exceeding what’s available. Globally, demand has more than doubled since 1960. Increased water demand is often the result of growing populations and industries like: 🚿 Irrigated agriculture 🐮Livestock 🔋Energy production 🏭Manufacturing 👉Meanwhile, lack of investment in water infrastructure, unsustainable water use policies or increased variability due to climate change can all affect the available water supply. 👉Water stress, the ratio of water demand to renewable supply, measures the competition over local water resources. The smaller the gap between supply and demand, the more vulnerable a place is to water shortages. A country facing “extreme water stress” means it is using at least 80% of its available supply, “high water stress” means it is withdrawing 40% of its supply.
