Professor Lazarus explained yesterday why the US has struggled to implement effective climate laws, stating that: "Our constitution creates a systemic problem for climate lawmaking." He ended with a powerful call to action: "If you want to make history, you need to fight for it". Nick Scott, Manager of the CCE's Law for Climate Action programme, reflected on the event saying: "In Professor Lazarus' insightful and engaging seminar he gave a sobering account of barriers to climate action in the US, but also reflected on some key opportunities for driving climate action through legal means." Thanks to everyone who attended the first of Cambridge Seminar Series on Law and the Climate Crisis. The next seminar is on 20 November, when Simon Holmes will discuss Competition Law: A Powerful Sword and Shield to Fight Climate Change. The conversation about #corporateculture continues in this fascinating podcast featuring Tina Mavraki CFA and Britt Johnston. Recommended listening for anyone interested in adding value to a business by making cultural improvements. This follows the recent publication of our Leadership Insight with Mavraki exploring why a positive culture is vital to the #netzero transition. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e6cEFrkF
"Here we have a lot of mini failures that are mounting. And you see the data on people, internal controls, strategic transformation, planning, and supervision. And you have to wonder, are we going to see another 2008?" So says Tina Mavraki, a former Citigroup trader now portfolio non-executive board director, in the latest episode of Following the Rules. Mavraki and Britt Johnston, a former sales trader now Emea head of conduct and culture at investment bank Natixis, discuss where financial institutions are going wrong in their efforts to address their cultural shortcomings. They detail the practical steps that finance bosses can take to meaningfully improve their organisational culture, and they outline how regulators could best support their efforts. They also explain how such changes - and the cultural improvements deriving from them - can ultimately add value to the businesses embracing them. 🌎 Booking now! 4 November - The Challenges of Constitutional Law in the United States for Climate Lawmaking In the first event in the Cambridge Seminar Series on Law and the Climate Crisis, Professor Richard Lazarus will discuss the links between U.S. constitutional law and climate change. It is a portentous time for climate lawmaking in the United States. The U.S. Congress is broken and unable to pass needed climate legislation. And a Supreme Court increasingly dominated by constitutional alarmists seems ready to strike down on constitutional grounds essential federal agency climate lawmaking efforts absent the very clear congressional authorisation that a paralysed Congress displays no ability to provide. In the past thirty months, the Court has decided three major rulings cutting back on federal agency authority, expressing skepticism of the Environmental Protection Agency in particular. Nor could this have happened at a worse time. For climate change, the price of such lawmaking delays is potentially catastrophic because the longer it takes to reduce increasing concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases, the exponentially harder it will be to do so. For that same reason, the results of the November Presidential elections are critically important for the climate issue. Come to Hughes Hall to hear Professor Lazarus speak at 5pm on 4 November, the eve of the Presidential election, and stay for free drinks and networking afterwards.
