“SMEs are the engine of the future, we must support them, we owe it to our patients” - a poignant statement from Nicola Heron, from the Medicines Discovery Catapult. Another great day at the Wilton Centre for a Pioneer Group event, today focusing on how we can tackle the #diseases of the future. Nicola opened the day, talking about the challenge of developing novel effective #medicines in a world that needs to cope with the effects of #climatechange, and the increased we are seeing in infectious diseases and #antimicrobialresistance. Really fascinating talks from Juliana Haggerty from CPI and Kit Erlebach from FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies about UK preparedness for future #pandemics. Prof Muhammad Safwan Akram from Teesside University and Cecilia Wong from The University of Manchester talked about #healthinequalities and how accelerating sustainable bio manufacturing can help reduce such inequalities. Prof John S. Young from National Horizons Centre talked about #wearable devices for managing long term conditions, allowing #patients to be more in control of their own health, receiving treatments sooner. Jess Tyson from CHAIN Biotechnology Ltd talked about #microbiome therapeutics and their potential to treat diseases. John Heap from University of Nottingham talked about the role of #engineeringbiology in scaling up sustainable treatments. Lee Dunham from Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult shared success stories from the Catapult and how collaboration across the ecosystem is accelerating novel #therapies from discovery to patients. Last but not least Linda Popplewell from National Horizons Centre shared her brilliant research in accelerating the translational development of #genetherapies for #rarediseases. One overarching theme is that #collaboration is key in tacking the infectious diseases of the future. We must come together and support each other, and in particular the SME community, to overcome the challenges we face as a society.
