Yesterday we held our first Trust Leaders' Network webinar of 24/25! It was great to hear from Lucien Bowater, CEO of Olex.AI (formerly SchoolOnline). A former Digital Director and MD at Sky, Lucien considered the questions every trust leader should be asking about the use of AI. He explored the risks and benefits of embracing AI, with a particular lens on supporting teaching and learning and tackling teacher workload. The interactive session allowed plenty of opportunities for trust leaders to share, test and develop their own thinking and approaches and learn from what other trusts are doing. It was wonderful to read the incredible feedback we received from Trust Leaders after the event itself, with 100% of attendees sharing that they felt that they had seen or learnt something that they plan to take back to their own trust. This was reaffirmed by an overall satisfaction rate of 4.9/5! What a way to round off the week! There's much more to come throughout the 2024/25 partnership year, as you can see from our programme of events. If you would like to learn the Trust Leaders' Network and how collaborating with Challenge Partners can support you and your trust then please contact us at partnershipsteam@challengepartners.org

What a day it was yesterday at Mary Ward House, London. We welcomed all partners taking part in the Growing the Top and Extending Leading Practice programmes for 2024/25, alongside some very special guest speakers. Firstly we heard from Lee Elliot-Major OBE who shared his thoughts on #inequity in our society and in #education. It was important to reflect on how can we challenge ourselves (and not just schools) to tackle issues such as social mobility and attendance. After a brilliant lunch, courtesy of the wonderful staff at Mary Ward House, our very own Head of Strategy and Innovation, Elizabeth King, kicked off our afternoon with the question "What do we mean by the word #Challenge?". It was wonderful to see such deep discussions between partners as Liz rounded off the session by bringing us all back to our mission which is consistently bolstered by the #combinedwisdom of our partners around the country. We were then lucky enough to enjoy a double-bill from ImpactEd Group! We heard from Group Director, Dr Chris Wilson, who captivated the room with an update on findings from The Research Commission on #pupilengagement, before we welcomed Owen Carter, Co-Founder and Director who addressed the challenge of understanding #attendance, and provided his insight into the drivers of pupil absence from the largest national research of its kind. It was brilliant to hear from Kate Roleston, Assistant Headteacher of Bengeworth C of E Academy, who joined Owen to share her personal experience of working with ImpactEd and the attendance measures her school adopted to significantly reduce pupil absence. The day was rounded off by Dame Sue John, our Executive Director, who shared her final reflections and extended her thanks to all speakers, organisers and, of course our wonderful partners who make up the 2024/25 cohort of Growing the Top and Extending Leading Practice participants!

We are delighted to share that Challenge Partners' Managing Director, Laura Lewis-Williams, will be working with the ImpactEd Group and fellow #schoolleaders and #systemleaders to review how #schoolengagement can be used as a #leadindicator. The commission, set up by the ImpactEd Group and including representatives from the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), Confederation of School Trusts (CST), Challenge Partners and The Reach Foundation, will survey more than 100,000 children and young people at primary and secondary schools across the country over the next year. The Commission brings together 22 #MAT and #systemleaders from across England, who will delve into the cognitive, emotional and behavioural factors underpinning the engagement levels of young people in education. Building on the global evidence base, and under the research direction of John Peter Jerrim, the study will use The Engagement Platform (TEP) to collect data from over 100,000 primary and secondary students in national census moments across the year. Want to hear more about the research, or sign your school up to be a part of the wider research cohort? Today, Challenge Partners held our 24/25 National Induction for school and trust leaders new to our national partnership this year. Preparing for a collaborative partnership year, our new partners experienced a collaborative day of sharing leading practice and hearing from thought-provoking speakers, with a collective optimism around Change and Resilience for the year ahead. Partners networked throughout the Induction and collaborated through a series of facilitated carousels, led by existing partner schools, who shared their leading practice. Topics ranged from Quality Teaching and Reading, to Employment Routes for pupils with SEND, to Transforming School Culture and Ethos. Partners also heard from thought-provoking speakers, such as Sam Freedman (Institute for Government) who unpacked what education under a Labour government will mean, and Dame Sue John (Challenge Partners) and Vijita Patel (Swiss Cottage School, Development & Research Centre) sharing the power of collaboration, anchored through the lens of practitioners. A big thank you to all of today’s speakers, carousel hosts, attendees and the Challenge Partners team for a rich day of collaboration. We look forward to a year of Change and Resilience through peer review, leadership development and sharing of best practice. “Trying to be wise all on one’s own is sheer folly” - La Rochefoucauld

Chief Executive at Challenge Partners and experienced Non-Executive. Speaks about #education #social justice #inequality #human flourishing #school improvement #leadership development #peer review.

Very pleased to see the unions, including Pepe DiIasio at Association of School and College Leaders and Paul Whiteman at NAHT - The school leaders' union, highlighting the need for DfE to take the lead on report cards. Ofsted and inspection are an important part of the jigsaw, but shouldn't have primacy in an initiative that needs to consider the whole suite of #accountability and #performance measures schools are subject to. The work needs to start with some deep thinking and engagement with the sector and stakeholders on who and what report cards are for. This is properly the job of the democratically elected government and it would be odd for Ministers and DfE to cede this to Ofsted. I wrote about this for Schools Week when report cards were first mooted in March 2023: https://lnkd.in/egEWnSky https://lnkd.in/egddV-xt
