Holly Waddell, “Evidence tells us #tutoring can have a powerful impact on pupils. We know that 1:1 and small group tutoring is implemented well and following key principles, it is likely impactful. We are coming to the culmination of this three-year project gathering evidence. While the final findings are being validated, I’m excited to share that: - Pupils receiving the tutoring experience saw an increase in self-efficacy (how much a pupil believes they will do well). - There are signs of an improvement in English and maths attainment (vs. those who didn’t receive tutoring). This is particularly true at the primary level. - Teachers and tutors felt pupils gained social and academic confidence and transferred this back into learning in the classroom. - Tutors highlighted that a small group environment supported learning that wouldn’t have occurred in classrooms. - Schools identified that the program allowed them to develop their teaching offer, reimagining and delivering a sustainable integrated package of small group and classroom teaching, which in particular allowed them to improve support for disadvantaged pupils.” Fiona Rutherford, “When you think about the program, originally introduced as a ‘#Covid19 catch up’, we’ve found it is an intervention that can impact a student and school in multiple ways. We have seen improvements in attainment, social-emotional, attendance, and whole-school outcomes. Disadvantaged, pupil premium students had some of the best outcomes. It has had so much more impact than its original intention through the evidence on the ground and ImpactEd Group research.” Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://ow.ly/47ez50TRv1L Listen on Spotify: https://ow.ly/UcMa50TRve8 Listen online: https://ow.ly/ykme50TRuWx hashtag #nationaltutoringprogramme #tutoring Education Development Trust Laura Fox

“Teachers views on leadership in the Autumn term directly link to whether they have left their job by the Summer” Drawing on three waves of The Engagement Platform (TEP) data collected from a panel of over 4,000 members of school staff in England, Professor John Jerrim’s paper shows that:    - Views of leadership in the autumn term correlate with whether teachers and school staff have left their job by the end of the academic year    - Increases in staff perceptions of the quality of school leadership are linked with increased job satisfaction Full paper available: https://lnkd.in/eqzgVxm2 Schools Week write up available: https://lnkd.in/eVd3Rw8h For more information or to speak to one of our team members about the project, contact us today. #teacherrecruitment #teacherretention Schools Week

What does employee engagement tell us about retention? Over the past two years, The Engagement Platform (TEP) has worked with a group of around 100 schools to better understand the impact of employee engagement. The central premise is that how staff think and feel about their role in the workplace drives their behaviours. Staff disengaged with leaders were twice as likely to leave Staff reporting high levels of engagement with SLT in November were much more likely to be satisfied in their jobs in June. This was over and above a range of other factors, including their views on pay, workload and how satisfied they were in their job. Importantly, we also found evidence that staff’s emotional engagement with SLT is related to movement of boots on the ground. Staff who were disengaged with SLT were twice as likely to leave their job over the following eight months than staff with the highest levels of engagement. In other words, there is now “hard” evidence of the employee engagement–behaviour link we thought likely to emerge when TEP was developed. ImpactEd: Research Commission on Engagement and Lead Indicators #RCELI The commission, set up by ImpactEd Group and including representatives from the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), Confederation of School Trusts (CST), Challenge Partners and REACH Foundation, will survey more than 100,000 children at primary and secondary schools across the country over the next year. The Commission comprises of 22 Commissioners from across the sector and will work in partnership to conduct the first National Cohort Study on Student Engagement. The Commission will not only examine national trends in the data, but report on the practical approach to fully utilising engagement data to support leaders improve outcomes. To be of genuine use, research and practice need to go hand in hand. The research findings will be published and disseminated  for the sector. Commission Chair, Dame Sue John, “It is my hope that the findings of this project can help give our school leaders a better understanding of the role engagement plays in driving positive outcomes for schools and pupils, as well as the practical tools and actionable insights to support school improvement.” Want to hear more about the research, or sign your school up to be part of the wider research cohort? Get in touch today: tep.uk The Engagement Platform (TEP) will be facilitating the data collection and technical delivery. TEP has been collecting and reporting on employee engagement data for the last two years and will build on these learnings to support Trusts and Schools to understand pupil engagement. Rob Hardcastle, CEO, Hatton Academies Trust, "We all know that pupil engagement lies at the heart of pupil achievement. As a Trust, we need to take every possible step to ensure levels of pupil engagement are as high as they can be throughout their time with us. We need to be able to identify and respond early on when a pupil is not as engaged as they were previously. This project will undoubtedly help us to do that." Laura Lewis-Williams, Managing Director, Challenge Partners, "In the current educational landscape, with its numerous challenges, it is crucial to identify sustainable strategies that can be shared across the education system to drive school and trust improvement and maximise the life chances of all children." The commissioners will be supported by technical commissioners including Professor John Jerrim of University College London and ImpactEd Group as research director. #education #educationnews #schoolsweek #tes
