"I wondered why there weren’t any businesses doing this in Guyana. I didn’t know how, I didn’t know when, but I knew that I wanted to do it from the time we started to ride." Cherry-Ann Greene knew she wanted to work for herself, but needed to find the right business idea. After renting bicycles with her husband on a trip to Suriname, she knew she wanted to create Guyana's first bicycle rental and tour company. Ride Along GY became a huge success, but Cherry-Ann knew that working with a mentor could support her in taking it to the next level. She joined our Mentoring Women in Business programme and was paired with a business professional mentor from India, who gave her a sounding board for her ideas and increased her confidence in working with tourists from other cultures. Around the world, girls face huge barriers in accessing equal rights and opportunities. In healthcare, education, economic participation, and so many other areas of life, girls continue to be left behind.   In fact, Equal Measures 2030's recent report estimates that a girl born today will not enjoy equal rights and opportunities until she is 97 years old, which is beyond her expected lifespan. Having welcomed a baby granddaughter just last year, I simply cannot accept that. We must create a brighter, more gender equal future for her generation.   Women entrepreneurs are a crucial part of this. When women are supported to thrive as business owners, they catalyse change for the girls who come after them. Their financial stability means they can support their daughters' health and education and better protect them from violence and discrimination. Barely any of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track to be achieved by the 2030 deadline.
