  • Chesterfield Special Cylinders is delighted to have been awarded a major contract to supply air pressure vessels to the Royal Canadian Navy's River-class destroyer programme. The £2.8 million contract award by Canadian shipbuilder Irving Shipbuilding Inc. covers the first three ships in the fifteen-ship programme and underpins the expected global defence order book development for Chesterfield Special Cylinders in FY25. Initial manufacturing milestones will commence in May 2025 and pressure vessels for the first three ships will be delivered to the programme over the next 5 years. Irving Shipbuilding Inc. will build the fifteen River-class destroyers to replace existing Halifax class frigates in the Canadian fleet. The new construction programme is an important part of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy and is the largest, most complex shipbuilding programme in Canadian history. The River-class destroyer is based on the established Type 26 Global Combat Ship platform, currently under construction for the UK's Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy.  The ships will form the backbone of Canada's future naval combat capability. Air pressure vessels supplied by Chesterfield Special Cylinders will form an integral part of safety-critical onboard systems. Chris Walters, Chief Executive of Pressure Technologies, commented: "I am delighted to confirm this £2.8 million contract award for Chesterfield Special Cylinders to deliver pressure vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy's River class destroyer programme, working closely with Irving Shipbuilding and supporting the Canadian National Shipbuilding Strategy. “This major contract award underpins our global defence order book in FY25 and further demonstrates the role played by the specialised engineering and manufacturing capabilities of Chesterfield Special Cylinders in naval new construction programmes globally." • 🌏 Celebrating World Hydrogen Week: Driving a hydrogen economy 🌏 It’s great to see such a buzz about hydrogen this week. Here at Chesterfield Special Cylinders our focus on hydrogen never waivers. During the recent Labour Party Conference there was a real emphasis placed on hydrogen and its role in the UK’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future. It was great to see this backed by progressive government policies, promise of green energy infrastructure investment and discussion about creating new manufacturing and supply chain jobs. Labour’s commitment to industrial decarbonisation is further demonstrated by their continued support for HAR1 and HAR2 funded programmes, with hydrogen seen as a crucial component of their decarbonisation strategy. It’s great to see the coverage that an awareness-raising week like this brings. Let’s not forget that to make the hydrogen economy happen, UK suppliers must maintain pressure on the government to prioritise investment in the hydrogen energy supply chain and our own skilled workforce in order to underpin a future hydrogen economy. As an established UK manufacturer of safety-critical hydrogen storage for over 80 years, we are already equipped and ready to deliver the safe, reliable and cost-effective storage and transportation solutions that a thriving hydrogen economy needs. To find out how we can help you and your hydrogen storage needs, please message us directly on LinkedIn, email us at: sales@chesterfieldcylinders.co.uk or telephone us on: +44 (0)114 242 7500 #WorldHydrogenWeek #WHW #HydrogenEconomy #NetZero #HydrogenStorage #SustainableFuture #H2
