#Dredging in #canal locks presents its own challenges. This is on the Ryders Green lock flight on the #Walsall Canal in Tipton. Our contractors Land & Water and The Rothen Group - Marine Plant Hire, Contracting, Piling Hammer Hire & Ecology have used a crane barge to get into the lock itself and remove dredgings as well as some interesting items! This includes organising events for networking, forums for discussing interesting topics, socialising, helping with obtaining Chartership, and much more. It’s not everyday you get a chance to take samples of #water & resuspended #sediments during a dredging operation. But that’s exactly what we have been able to do at Walsall. We already know from pre-project sediment #sampling that levels of petroleum hydrocarbons and specific metals such as zinc are very high here. However this type of sampling can tell us a lot about potential #environmental risks of the operation especially as it pertains to fish welfare & #waterquality💧🌳 Canal & River Trust Land & Water SOCOTEC UK CIWEM West Midlands

Very productive site visit this morning with colleagues and our contractor Land & Water We are currently #dredging the southern section of the #Walsall Canal. It has come with an number of complications in terms of suspension of oils and other contaminants from the silt. However a mitigation plan has been implemented including fish rescue, #waterquality monitoring and containment devices. Well done to our Project Manager Emily Jane Conway (nee Harris) for organising the visit and for managing under challenging circumstances. Leakage testing with my colleague Thomas Thorley in the #engineering team. At the Canal & River Trust we have developed a testing suite to keep help investigate potential #canal sources of leakage or discount them! Cross collaboration with teams is vital to solving problems across the network 💧🌳 CIWEM West Midlands

I had a great evening yesterday judging the CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Dr Jenkins Midlands Branches Early Careers Professionals competition and delivering my first keynote speech 😀 Well done to the CIWEM West Midlands Branch and especially Gen Yip for your brilliant organisation of the event and to all the finalists. It is brilliantly inspiring to see the energy and enthusiasm amongst our Early Career Professionals 🌟

Had a wonderful time last night helping host the CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Dr Jenkins Award with the #WestMidlands & East Midlands committee. A huge well done to all the finalists, I was very impressed with all of the talks and the insights they provided from the wonderful work our young #professionals deliver!
