⚡Recharge, refocus, rebuild: Cleantech for UK’s Manifesto for the general election⚡ Our nation stands at the threshold of a transformative moment. Over the course of the next political mandate, we can generate thousands of new jobs for citizens in all regions of the UK and usher in a fresh era of prosperity and net zero industry. Currently, all major economies are competing vying for the lead in a global #cleantech race, and the UK must take decisive action to maintain its #competitiveness.  Today, at the The Royal Institution, Cleantech for UK unveiled its manifesto, outlining the following three priorities to secure our cleantech industrial leadership:   ⚡ Recharge the cleantech economy by closing the scaleup funding gap  🎯 Refocus on enabling policy  💡 Rebuild British leadership in key cleantech sectors At the launch event our Director, Sarah Mackintosh moderated an expert panel consisting of Jon Fuller (Breakthrough Energy ), Ed Phillips (Future Planet Capital), and Joe McMullen (AirEx Technologies) discussing their lived experiences in the cleantech field. The panellists shared their perspectives on their sector’s needs and the hurdles they observe for massively scaling and deploying cleantech solutions in the UK.  For more information, you can access the Manifesto linked here or via the image posted below: https://lnkd.in/gUbm8WTj We'd like to thank Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation for hosting us at the Royal Institution. 📣 THE UK NEEDS A FIRST-OF-A-KIND TASKFORCE 📣 Today, we are excited to share our latest report, detailing how Britain can secure £7.5bn of investment in pioneering green technologies by 2030, creating up to 50,000 high-skilled jobs across the country. The report was presented last night at a small discussion hosted together with Octopus Electric Vehicles, joined by officials from Department for Business and Trade & HM Treasury. Our study, conducted together with Earth Set, examines how to catalyse both public and private investment into first-of-a-kind (FOAK) clean technology projects – breakthrough innovations ready for commercial scale. These include sustainable aviation fuel, nuclear for maritime transport, and green hydrogen production. Whilst the UK leads Europe in overall cleantech investment, funding for these pioneering projects remains challenging due to their unique risk profile and significant capital requirements. We interviewed 15 cleantech innovators and leaders, who all highlighted a range of barriers to scaling cleantech in the UK, ranging from a lack of sufficient domestic funding, inflexible and outdated regulation, as well as infrastructural hurdles such as severe delays in grid connection and planning processes. Our recommendations include: 💡 Establish a FOAK taskforce 💷 Establish a dedicated FOAK workstream within the National Wealth Fund as part of its set-up phase, tasked with reporting to HM Treasury and No. 10. This workstream should aim to unlock £500m annually, leveraging 3x private capital, ensuring the fund is optimised to support high-risk, high-reward cleantech project 📋 Streamline regulations to unlock institutional investment 📈 Expand revenue certainty mechanisms like Contracts for Difference ⚡Create a FOAK champion programme A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this report! Policy & Advocacy, Cleantech for UK

It's great to see the Science Secretary launch the new Regulatory Innovation Office to accelerate access to emerging technologies. While this is a positive step forward, it’s worth noting the limited emphasis on climate and the clean economy in the Office’s priorities. Technologies like engineering biology, space innovations, AI in healthcare, and autonomous tech will undoubtedly improve efficiency and services, but they may not significantly "shift the dial" on the climate crisis—the most pressing challenge we face. Efficiency is important, but systemic change is essential. Embedding climate and clean economy goals into the RIO’s mandate will be critical to ensuring clean tech innovation is supported by the right regulatory framework.
