🌡️ The science is very clear when it comes to the UK’s goal to reach net zero by 2050. With every increment of warming, the climate risks escalate. Ignoring emissions reductions will only lead to more extreme impacts and escalating costs of adaptation. 📈 Furthermore, net zero can make the UK economy resilient, productive and competitive. While it is true that net zero involves upfront costs, it can drive innovation and yield huge co-benefits. Offshore wind is just one example, which now provides almost 15% of the UK's electricity despite being many times more expensive in the 2010s. 🚲 Co-benefits, such as reduced air pollution and traffic congestion (which costs the NHS and business £20bn per year), can also produce sizable savings. 👁️🗨️ Finally, the vast majority of the British public also support net zero. But to ensure public support, policies must be fair and emphasise personal choice. It is also critical the benefits of climate policies are framed in a similar way, for example by emphasing how they tackle inequality. Our series of essays, co-produced by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, tackles many common myths to underline the importance of acting on net zero. Authors include: Joeri Rogelj, Dimitri Zenghelis, Sam Hampton, Lorraine Whitmarsh MBE and Hettie Moorcroft. https://lnkd.in/eew5ZMp4

Very exciting to see three Undaunted startups selected in this year's H&M Foundation Global Change Award top 20 finalists - that's out of 476 applicants from 69 countries across 6 continents! Congratulations to all the finalists 👏 🌟 PulpaTronics has developed a revolutionary metal-free and chipless RFID paper tag which is laser printed using a carbon-based material. These tags are cheaper, recyclable, and significantly reduce the environmental footprint of RFID tag production. 🌟 Sequinova’s biodegradable sequins are set to revolutionise fashion by replacing traditional plastic sequins with more sustainable alternatives. These sequins are made from bio-based materials, breaking down naturally and reducing microplastic pollution. 🌟 Tera Mira is on a mission to transform the textile industry with a biobased alternative to elastane, harnessing the power of seaweed cultivation. This innovative approach not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also champions sustainable textile manufacturing. The Global Change Award seeks bold, early-stage innovations that can #decarbonise #fashion and drive industry-wide transformation – all while ensuring that both people and the planet thrive: https://lnkd.in/gDCx-ngX Imperial Enterprise Scale Space White City Innovation District Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment The Royal Institution
