In the second edition of Clipway Insights, powered by TESS, Clipway’s Tech-Enabled Secondaries System, we uncover interesting patterns in the valuation of private equity portfolio companies. For example: through examining over 600 unique funds and over 8,000 underlying assets, TESS reveals a pattern of underperformance among the ‘Small’ exposure companies that tend to fall within the bottom 20-30% of mature private equity portfolios, which can have an outsized impact on secondaries returns. This underscores the importance of thoroughly examining an entire portfolio during due diligence. To achieve this, secondary buyers should leverage the extensive private equity data available and recent technological advancements.
