We believe that farm animals should not and need not suffer.
About us
Compassion in World Farming was founded in 1967 by a British farmer who became horrified by the development of modern, intensive factory farming. Today we campaign peacefully to end all cruel factory farming practices. We believe that the biggest cause of cruelty on the planet deserves a focused, specialised approach – so we only work on farm animal welfare.

PROGRESS: This week our friends at River Action UK have won a key legal challenge which will lead to tough new regulations around the disposal of chicken manure. A high court judge ruled that chicken manure can be classified as industrial waste which will have implications for intensive farms across the country. Currently, this toxic manure is polluting our countryside and choking our rivers. 70% of the phosphate in the River Wye comes from agriculture, a river whose health status has been downgraded to “unfavourable-declining” largely due to the high concentration of intensive poultry farming in the river's catchment. Antibiotics have "been administered to animals to paper over the cracks in questionable farming methods" This has contributed to the rise of superbugs with infections increasingly failing to respond to drugs. Harming animals harms us.
When our reporter Andrew Wasley climbed onto the fence of the farm connected to much of the beef on our plates, he saw cattle standing in pools of waste. 🗣️ “I smelled the farm long before I saw it ... many of the animals were caked in excrement and muck.” Poor farming conditions jeopardise animal welfare – but they’re also central to the spread of “superbugs”. Why? Because for at least 70 years, farm animals have been given antibiotics to mask unethical farming methods. Now the meat industry is responsible for 73% of global antibiotic use – and it has contributed to a global rise in antibiotic resistance that kills almost a million people globally each year. This unfolding crisis is captured in a new documentary featuring TBIJ's Andrew. “AMR: Dying To Change The World” premiered this week and will be available on demand soon – stay tuned! Shockingly, there are no requirements for labels to state how animals farmed for meat and dairy are kept. Misleading terms such as ‘farm fresh’ can be applied to products from animals that have been intensively farmed. A new report from The Animal Law Foundation has exposed just how widespread the issue is. Pervasive misinformation in the food supply chain is impacting public perceptions of animal farming and impacting consumer decisions. Last year, the previous Government consulted on animal welfare labelling and we're calling on Defra to publish the results as soon as possible. We urgently need a mandatory method of production labelling which clearly informs consumers about the conditions animals were kept in.
