After an extremely busy period, with several cases in both Military Court Centres on every day for the last week and Service police interviews in Estonia, I would just like to give a very public ‘thank you’ to the team at Cornwall Street Barristers, especially Kellie Enever (nee James) and Matthew Bolt, and to Sarah Magill, who have represented my clients with the highest degree of professionalism, including compassion. Whilst we are not a formal team, I know that I can trust you three implicitly when I am busy in other parts of the world representing the interests of service personnel, so thank you for effectively being my team. There are, of course, other great barristers whom I instruct at courts martial, but the current spotlight in what has been an exceptionally busy time is firmly on you three. Thank you.

THERE IS STILL TIME TO APPLY FOR PUPILLAGE Read this blog by our current pupil and if you would like to apply go to https://lnkd.in/gg3RJRt It feels like only yesterday I received the call to say I had been fortunate enough to be offered pupillage. Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that Cornwall Street is an excellent place to learn and grow as a barrister. Pupillage is a demanding year with many steep learning curves and although I have been challenged throughout pupillage, I have always been made to feel welcome and comfortable in chambers. During pupillage I was faced with lots of worries about how I was progressing, whether I was really cut out to be a barrister and whether I would be fortunate to be offered tenancy. Thankfully, I always felt as though everyone within chambers wanted me to succeed which helped me overcome my doubts. During my first six months, I was fortunate enough to shadow a variety of work across different practice areas. I was able to shadow both senior and junior members, which prepared me to then carry out a variety of work in my second six months. I have observed complex trials in the Crown Court, to effective negotiation in the Family Court and also meticulously drafted submissions in the Civil Court. My pupil supervisors were heavily invested in my progress, providing me with constructive and invaluable feedback. This support did not end when I became a tenant, my pupil supervisors and members of chambers are always available to answer questions. During my second six months, I was overwhelmed by the opportunities my clerks gave me. Never did I think that I would be privileged enough to be in the Crown Court the very first day of being on my feet. I truly felt that the clerks understood the importance of gradually increasing the volume and complexity of my work. I feel that this approach enabled me to grow as an advocate with confidence and competence. I always knew I could ask for support from any member of chambers and I have been overwhelmed by how patient and generous with their time each member has been. This was invaluable, providing both professional guidance and moral support. I was always invited to chambers social events and this made me feel like a valuable member of Cornwall Street from the very beginning. Choosing Cornwall Street has been one of the best decisions I could have made. I feel that the experience I have gained, the relationships and friendships I have built and the knowledge I have acquired throughout my pupillage has set me up for an extremely rewarding and successful career at the bar.
