Culture isn’t clean-cut—it’s chaotic, unpredictable, and constantly evolving. So why do so many brands try to tidy it up? In this thought-provoking piece, Julia Smaldone, Director of Cultural Strategy at STRAT7 Crowd DNA, breaks down why brands need to stop looking at culture from the outside in—and start working with its inherent messiness. From decoding real human tensions to challenging surface-level trends, she shares four essential principles for brands that want to stay culturally relevant. • Four years ago, we hosted the 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝘅𝗻, exploring how brands can engage with a more future-facing portrayal through gender literacy (nice work, Jennifer Simon, Ph.D). Now as part of activities arranged by our DEI Team to mark International Women’s Day, we revisited how identity has changed in 2025 in the current age of Macho Revisited, and ‘Messy Masculinity’ from our recent Trend report, Pause, Fast Forward, Rebound? 📩 Get in touch if you want to learn more about How To Talk Womxn in 2025.   👌 to our DEI team who opened up meaningful conversations about the tensions between ‘masking’ and ‘over-sharing’ at work for womxn who may be affected by hormones... pregnancy... Menopause... 👊 as well as highlighted initiatives such as our safe-guarding ‘Buddy system’ for qualitative work, and our parental return to work bonus. 👄 + opened to the floor what else we can do as a company to talk better womxn. Meanwhile, perhaps this personal reflection about what it’s like to work at Crowd as a mother sums up what we’re trying to get right: “𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 10 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘌𝘐 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬 – 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺. 𝘐𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘴 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘴.” As a cultural insights agency, we recognise the importance of walking the talk and doing our bit to dismantle the glass ceiling (or at least give it a good shake)...
