This morning on BBC Breakfast, the important work of Black in Cancer was highlighted, featuring insights from Sigourney Bonner, Magda Ali and Randy Greaves at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. Our Director of Evidence and Implementation Naser Turabi then joined presenters Ben and Sally on the breakfast sofa to shed light on the complexities of cancer inequalities and the dedicated efforts we are making to address them. Congratulations to Brendan Chiong, Yishan Pan, and Cindy Xinyu Ji on completing their research placements with us as part of our Undergraduate Summer Placement Scheme. 👏   During their 8-week placement, each student undertook a research project, supervised by a postdoctoral researcher who provided invaluable guidance and support. This partnership allowed the students to delve deep into the world of cancer research, developing their skills and expanding their knowledge. Their hard work culminated in a presentation of their research findings last week, showcasing their progress and the depth of their understanding.   A huge thank you to our dedicated postdocs, Lakshmi Balasubramaniam, Adriana Fonseca, and Mollie Wilson. Their mentorship played a crucial role in nurturing the students' curiosity and helping them navigate the world of research. In addition to having an extra pair of hand in the lab for 8 weeks, our postdoc mentors designed and conceptualised projects for their mentees while also gaining invaluable experience in shortlisting and interviewing candidates.   We look forward to following these students' future endeavours and their contributions to the field of research.

Cambridge PhD student Swetha Kannan was 12 when she decided she wanted to unravel the mysteries of cancer. Twelve years later, Swetha has launched The Lalitha Foundation, a social enterprise to support the mental health of cancer patients in India. She’s helped to design a portable diagnostics tool to detect head and neck cancers. What inspired her to take this path? And how will her work make a difference to cancer sufferers in remote areas? Congratulations to Dan Bell, Anna Rantionova and Paul Jordon at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on completing their 3-month research internship hosted by our Nursing and Allied Health Professionals Programme 👏 ! This NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) research initiative aims to help healthcare professionals develop research skills and experience. The programme has offered them a comprehensive exploration of various aspects of clinical research, covering diverse specialties such as critical care, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, and cancer. Each intern was paired with an experienced mentor to guide them through the internship. This personalised support system aims to enhance the learning experience and provide valuable networking opportunities within the research community. Dan said: "The networks formed with my mentor and the wider research team will be invaluable in helping me achieve these goals." Dan, Anna and Paul are the third cohort to complete this research internship programme and they have now become research champions within their respective fields. World Head and Neck Cancer Day is tomorrow! Centre members of the Thoracic Cancer Programme, Nursing and Allied Health Care Professionals Programme, and CRUK RadNet Cambridge hosted a stall in Addenbrooke's Outpatients today to raise awareness of head and neck cancers. We had a great day with over 50 visitors who learned about the symptoms and treatments of head and neck cancers, and took on the fun challenge of our pompom surgery activity!

Sigourney Bonner co-founded Black in Cancer while studying for her PhD in paediatric brain tumours at the University of Cambridge. One objective is to increase the number of Black scientists in cancer research, which has led to establishing a Black Leaders in Cancer PhD Scholarship Programme in partnership with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and the Windsor Fellowship. One of the first students supported by the funded programme, Randy Greaves, says studying on our MRes+PhD programme has given him the opportunity to realise a life-long dream.
