It’s been an action-packed week of Stand Up To Cancer celebrations here at Cancer Research UK! We put on our very first (and very popular) office dog show, watched our executive board battle it out, Bake Off-style, hosted Ginger’s Big Drag Quiz, and drenched some senior members of staff as well as many other events all over the country and the organisation – all in the name of raising money to accelerate life-saving research. A massive thank you to everyone that’s been involved in the fun, and also to ScottishPower for their ongoing support! But the fun isn’t over yet – make sure to tune in to Channel 4 from 9pm for a night of great TV 🧡

#IntheNews: A new study by UCL, and funded by us, reveals that around 350 young adults start smoking daily in the UK 🚨 This equates to more than 27,000 people age 18-25 starting to smoke tobacco regularly each year. Smoking causes around 160 cancer cases daily in the UK and is estimated to cost society £46 billion annually for England alone. Michelle Mitchell OBE, our chief executive, said: "When it comes to protecting young people against the harms of tobacco, we can’t afford to be complacent. It’s time for the UK Government to prove its commitment to prevention by making good on its promise to introduce the Tobacco and Vapes Bill." Alongside Action on Smoking and Health (UK), we want to see this legislation brought to Parliament as soon as possible and implemented in all four UK nations to help protect young people. Congratulations to Isobel Taylor-Hearon, PhD Student at The University of Manchester, for winning the latest round of our #ResearchIsBeautiful campaign 💙 Isobel's submission captures #BreastCancer research in action, which she is using to understand more deeply the earliest changes cells undergo as they transition into breast cancer cells. Fantastic work by Isobel and a huge thank you for sharing your research moment with us during #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. Cancer Research UK Science and Innovation are looking for their next winner, so find out how you can showcase your work in the comments 👇

Have you heard of target product profiles? They're similar to blueprints and can guide the development of tests that meet the needs of the healthcare system. We're driving their progress in oncology 🩺 Cancer is easier to treat when it's diagnosed early because doctors are able to offer more treatment options before cancers grow and spread. Innovation could help earlier diagnosis, but getting new tests from the lab to the patient can be challenging. For cancer research, target product profiles could provide a clear map for scientists to use by outlining the characteristics a new technology (in this case, a diagnostic test) should have to address a specific unmet clinical need. This means they can take a promising new technology from the bench to the bedside, so clinicians can diagnose more cancers earlier. Read our latest article to find out everything you need to know about target product profiles and our plans to drive progress 👇 #CancerResearch #Diagnostics

We're exploring the history of BRCA genes - what they are and how we've used these findings over the last thirty years to save lives. Since their discovery, it's estimated that thousands, if not millions, of people have been tested for faults in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Everybody has these genes, but sometimes they can be faulty, which increases the risk of several types of cancer developing. Share this post with your network to raise awareness and find out more in the comments 👇 #CRUKscience #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Two-thirds of people who smoke start before the age of 18. Michael (pictured with granddaughter Olivia) was one of those two-thirds. He was also part of the two-thirds of smokers who die from tobacco-related diseases. When Michael died from lung cancer in 2001, his son Gower was also a smoker. 14 years after stopping smoking, he reflects on addiction, age of sale legislation, and the impact it’ll have on avoidable deaths. Over the summer we travelled across the UK with NIVEA Sun to share our top tips for enjoying the sun safely, and the roadshow was seen by more than 92,000 people! From town centres to festival fields and the beach - thanks to everyone who visited us to say hello and learn! 😎 In the UK almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer could be prevented by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sunbeds, so we're proud of the impact the roadshow has on raising awareness of cancer prevention. Thank you to the roadshow teams and our partner, NIVEA Sun - for over 10 years we've helped millions of people across the UK stay safe in the sun 👏 #Partnership #CancerPrevention #Health Beiersdorf
