Today, I fulfilled a long-held ambition - that of watching an orchestra rehearse and having the opportunity to understand the role and challenges of the role of conductor. Courtesy of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the immensely talented Kerem Hasan I sat in on their final rehearsal before this afternoon's performance. What a fantastic experience!   I have so many questions, though: - How does a conductor gel a large group of individual performers into a coherent performance? - How does the conductor get the orchestra on-board with their vision for the particular piece of music? - How much impact can a conductor really have on a performance, especially with an orchestra at the top of their game (like the CBSO)? - In a short period of time (especially for a visiting conductor), how do you get the  chemistry right? - What roles does authenticity play in building trust? - With very little opportunity for explicit feedback, what role does sense and intuition play?   The parallels with other forms of leadership are obvious.   You can find out the answers to these questions (and more) when we release the episode of the Culture de-cooded podcast in December. Our account exec Bradley, highlights a 5 step plan to rebuilding a strong in-office culture, inspired by Amazon's recent announcement that they'd be mandating 5-days in-office for all employees... 🏢 Amazon's decision is a clear and deliberate move in order to rediscover and reinforce the culture that made them successful, so here are 5 steps to building a stronger culture by bringing people back into the office: ➡️Step 1: Set clear expectations. Be explicit with your culture and make it clear that being in person is key to developing it. As well as being consistent with in-office days; this doesn’t have to mean 5 days a week, but consistency is key for reconnecting teams and driving impact. ➡️Step 2: Make the office a collaborative hub. Put emphasis on brainstorming sessions, team meetings and cross-department collaboration to maximize face-to-face interaction. ➡️Step 3: Reinforce culture on-site. Use in-person time to share company values, encourage mentorship, and create those spontaneous ‘hallway conversations’ that drive innovation. ➡️Step 4: Communicate the 'why.' Employees need to know why in-office work is essential for the team’s success and personal growth. Share the purpose behind these expectations. ➡️Step 5: Measure and track it. Once you've made it explicit and explained the 'Why', you must now embed it and measure it over time to ensure it is manageable. Why does this all matter? → Builds team connections and improves collaboration → Strengthens company culture and value alignment → Accelerates decision-making and accountability → Boosts employee engagement and morale 👀 The office isn’t just a workspace; it’s a culture space - which has been lost since the introduction of remote working...
