About us
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is the flagship of musical life in Birmingham and the West Midlands – and one of the world’s great orchestras. Based in Symphony Hall, it gives over 100 concerts each year in Birmingham, the UK and around the world, playing music that ranges from classics to contemporary, film music and even symphonic disco. With a far-reaching community programme and a family of world-class choruses and youth ensembles, it’s involved in every aspect of music-making in the region. Elgar conducted the orchestra’s very first symphonic concert in 1920. But it was when it discovered the young British conductor Simon Rattle in 1980 that the CBSO became internationally famous. Rattle’s successors Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons helped cement that global reputation. Now, under the dynamic leadership of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, associate conductor Michael Seal, assistant conductor Jonathan Bloxham and chorus director Simon Halsey CBE, the CBSO continues to do what it does best – playing great music for the people of Birmingham and the Midlands. As it approaches its centenary in 2020, the CBSO, more than ever, remains the heart of musical life in the UK’s Second City.

It’s hard to believe we’re already half way through CBSO in the City! We’ve absolutely loved performing for so many people this week in Birmingham. There’s still plenty more to come, but here’s a quick look at everywhere we’ve been so far 👇📸 ✨ Thousands of you turned up to the Bullring Birmingham on Monday. We performed, you conducted! Huge thanks to Birmingham Weekender for having us ✨ Whether you were on your usual morning commute or boarded the tram especially, our wonderful Music Director performed for some lucky commuters aboard the West Midlands Metro on Tuesday. If you missed Kazuki on the Tram, he’ll be doing it all over again tomorrow! ✨ Just around the corner from our usual home of Symphony Hall, CBSO strings and brass performed for café goers at YORKS IKON LIMITED ✨ From central Birmingham to the beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens, CBSO brass quintet took to the bandstand for friends and families alike ✨ If you were browsing the Thinktank Museum's incredible collection on Tuesday or Wednesday, you might have heard our musicians playing under the iconic Spitfire! We’re hugely grateful for the generous support provided by John Osborn CBE and NBB Law (Previously Nicholls Brimble Bhol) which has helped to make these events possible.
