Years ago, 15-year-old Lee Biggins, CEO and founder of CV-Library, left school with a handful of Es and Fs at GCSE. If he could go back in time to that GCSE results day, this is what he’d tell himself.
An important message for 15-year-old me panicking on GCSE results day... “It’s better to be successful at life than successful at school, because life lasts a lot longer. It’s also a lot more fun!” I failed spectacularly at school. Es and Fs, that was my story. Not exactly the dream start. Qualifications are great. They can open doors and get you where you want to be faster and easier. But school just wasn’t my bag, despite the teachers trying! But I always had an eye for making a bit of money. I would often be found walking up and down Basingstoke Canal selling cold cans of coke to the fishermen 😊 I was also lucky to have a Dad who ran a very successful and dependable local carpet-fitting business. I worked for him and did not get let off lightly – they were physically tough days. But he taught me the value of treating customers fairly and running a trusted company. These were the lessons that built a foundation for my career. When it was time for me to find my own job (I think Dad had had enough of me), I realised how long-winded the job-hunting process was. That’s where the idea for CV-Library was born. Fast forward to today, and I’m the owner and CEO of two successful job sites (CV-Library and Resume-Library). I’m challenged every day. I get to push myself and still learn ‘on the job’. And I get to travel the world with my family. Probably not the life my teachers thought I would lead! So, if your results aren't what you’d hoped, remember that your story is just beginning. Focus on building the skills that matter – resilience, hard work, and the ability to spot an opportunity. For me, success in life is way more fulfilling than success at school. And it lasts much longer. #motivation #lifelessons #nevergiveup #entrepreneur #successstory #GCSEresults
