Darwin Emeritus Fellow Professor Carol Brayne CBE talked to BBC Radio 4's Inside Health this week as part of a discussion on the use of new drugs to combat Alzheimer's disease. Professor Brayne, who retired this year from her role as Director of Cambridge Public Health, has been at the forefront of population studies of ageing and the epidemiology of dementia, for the past 40 years. "We need to take a step back and look at what we do for truly reducing our risk, at a population level, for dementia," she told the programme. "We've shown that it is possible across the decades, with basically healthier individuals in society. We need to look at inequalities which confer a higher risk of dementia, in shorter lives." https://lnkd.in/eAadVFRp

Climate scientist, Darwin Fellow and Director of Cambridge Zero Professor Emily Shuckburgh sounded a much-needed note of optimism on the climate crisis this morning. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme she acknowledged the severity of the impact which is already being felt from rising global temperatures, but highlighted the ways in which researchers at Cambridge are rising to the challenge. "There are all kinds of incredibly exciting new technologies that are coming out here, whether that's super-fast charging batteries for electric vehicles, or artificial leaves to develop synthetic fuels, or AI-enabled systems, or closing the loop on manufacturing processes to slash waste. We're working with innovative start-ups, working with businesses - it's really quite exciting." #cambridgeforourplanet https://lnkd.in/eg8Rb3Ta (Listen from 1hr 46mins)

Darwin Emeritus Fellow and CEO of Benchmark Cambridge Professor Lawrence Sherman has told The Times that by analysing patterns of behaviour, data scientists could prevent police misconduct by identifying officers at risk of causing or suffering harm. “This could make a difference and, coincidentally, save a lot of money by investing in what we’ve never done in policing — which is to try to help people who are close to the edge, as opposed to telling them to ‘man up’,” he said. Dr Mairead Ryan, who graduated from Darwin earlier this year with a PhD in Medical Sciences, is leading a newly launched venture sharing the latest research of child and adolescent health with parents and teachers. Designed to support all those championing health and well-being in educational settings, School Health Pulse aims to bridge the gap between cutting-edge health research and real-world impact. “We’re passionate about sharing research findings in a way that’s clear and easy to understand for teachers, parents and others,” says Mairead. https://lnkd.in/eTpUM-pN

As 70 Darwinians prepare to graduate this weekend, we talked to two of them about dreams come true, the addictive nature of research, and why the right time to return to education is different for everyone. Thank you to Nobert Nyandire and Louise Walter for letting us share their stories, and congratulations to everyone graduating tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/eP9UaCni
