Changemakers Catalyst Fund 2025: Applications are now Open! 🚀 Yesterday saw the launch of the Changemakers Catalyst Fund for 2025, which will award up to 5-6 grants of up to £2,000 each for initiatives led by Homerton students. The Homerton Changemakers Catalyst Fund Development Day II kicked off with welcome addresses from Homerton Fellow and Postgraduate Tutor, Dr Robin Bunce and Homerton Science Society’s Misha de Fockert, before the reigns were handed over to Kevin Powell, a global leader and practitioner of consumer centric innovation to chair the following sessions. The first special guest speaker was Abiel M., a Homerton alumnus and Catalyst Fund Winner 2022, who gave an inspiring talk about his journey from Cambridge to becoming CEO & Co-Founder of Vuala. Rajeshwari Iyer, Co-Founder of sAInaptic, then provided valuable insight into how to deliver a strong pitch, followed by Dr Catherine Hasted Hasted, Deputy Director at The Skoll Centre, Said Business School, who used case studies to demonstrate how best to be an ‘entrepreneurial leader’. After a short break, attendees returned for a talk from Serial Entrepreneur and Investor Rupert Baines who shared his expertise on what investors are looking for when they invest in early-stage start-ups, followed by Christine Martin, Head of Ventures at Cambridge Enterprise who talked about the importance of impact in entrepreneurship and University support for early-stage founders. The individual sessions were followed by a panel Q&A with the speakers, before Changemakers Ambassador Jesimiel Akinsuyi officially declared the Homerton Changemakers Catalyst Fund applications open, accompanied by a few words from last year’s Catalyst Fund winner, Kate Lucas. 2025 grants will be made for establishing a social enterprise or business, supporting an existing start-up or project, developing a creative project or campaign, or research towards a new enterprise. The fund is explicitly to support ventures at the start-up stage, where catalyst funding of this kind will make a substantive difference to the likely success of the project. Apply by Application Form and a 2-min video pitch by Tuesday 29 April at 17:00. Last week, Dr Fernanda Gallo, Associate Professor in History and Politics at Homerton College, launched her latest book, 'Hegel and Italian Political Thought: The Practice of Ideas, 1832-1900', at the Cambridge University Press Bookshop on Trinity Street in Cambridge. In attendance at the launch were fellow academics, as well as Fernanda's family, friends and colleagues from Homerton College, including Homerton Principal, Lord Simon Woolley. The book, which is Dr Gallo's second monograph, examines Italy in the nineteenth century, and the generation of intellectuals who engaged with Hegel's philosophy while actively participating in Italian political life. Gold, silver, and the Benin Bronzes HOMERTON COLLEGE Principal, Lord Simon Woolley, expressed hope that the Benin Bronzes held by the University’s museum would be returned. Lord Woolley said he was delighted to host a dinner this week with Nigeria's foreign minister, Yusuf Tuggar. He was joined by Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, and a high-powered delegation of politicians, officials, and captains of industry from Africa’s most populous nation. Guests also included Professor Nick Thomas, director of the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, which currently holds the 116 bronzes that were looted from the Benin kingdom by Victorian colonialists in 1897. Cambridge University has indicated it is supportive of returning the Benin Bronzes, but guarantees were being sought about the items remaining on public display and not being sold. Lord Woolley said he believed progress on this matter had been made at the dinner, and said that the minister and his delegation were “golden company” and everyone enjoyed the “silver service” at the RAC Club in London. Writing on his LinkedIn page, he added: “Hosting Nigeria’s Foreign Minister His Excellency Yusuf Tuggar and his impressive team was a complete joy. “It wasn’t just the ambition and vision he has for his country and continent but also his genuine desire to find partners who will collaborate for mutual success. “Above all I loved the energy in that room from such an array of talent. Watch this space for wonderful things that will emerge, I’m sure.” Pictured: Lord Woolley (centre) is flanked by Nigeria's foreign minister, Yusuf Tuggar, (to his left in the picture), and Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria.
