Treating greenhouse wastewater with microalgae and transforming the produced biomass into microalgae-based products? Take a sneak peek at the work done by our partners from Portugal 👀 ⬇ #Microalgae #BlueBioeconomy

REALM algae project is going at full speed! During the past weeks, we performed pilot-scale cultivation and tested a biorefinery pipeline to be implemented in the project. We started with the cultivation of Chlorella sp. in 3-m3 of drain water provided by Grupo Hubel, for biomass production and removal of excess nutrients. Then, the produced biomass was harvested and concentrated using membrane filtration, which was then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis. Finally, another membrane filtration was performed to separate the permeate from the retentate using 2 different membrane cut-offs. This process resulted in 4 different fractions, which were freeze-dried and provided to the partners for testing and product development.

I'm pleased to announce that I recently graduated from the Field Skills Programme, hosted by Natural History Society of Northumbria. This has been an invaluable experience in finding and identifying species local to Upper Teesdale, the North Pennines and Northumberland. One of my highlights from these past few months is the unique interest in alpine plants that I have developed, not forgetting the surprise appearance of a crayfish and some extremely unpredictable weather. A big thank you to James C. and the rest of the NHSN team for being so welcoming and knowledgeable. I hope to continue my learning with you in the future!

🌍 Plastic Recycling Complexities: An LCA Consultant's View ♻️ Last week, our talented LCA consultant, Gladys Castillo Leal Castillo, delivered an insightful presentation on the challenges surrounding plastic recycling. Her talk, "Plastic Recycling Complexities: An LCA Consultant's View," explored the environmental impacts, data challenges, and opportunities in this space. 🔍 Key Highlights: - Challenges: Accessing reliable data for various recycling processes, especially with novel technologies that are often confidential, can complicate Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). - Gaps in Support: There’s a disconnect between recycling technology developers and end users, making data accessibility and transparency critical for accurate environmental assessments. - What Works: Tools like openLCA and ISO standards help create consistency, but the lack of transparency in emerging technologies can limit our ability to fully assess environmental impacts. Thank you, Gladys, for highlighting these important aspects of plastic recycling! 👏 If you're interested in understanding the environmental impacts of recycling or exploring how LCA can benefit your sustainability goals, join us this Thursday, 24th of October 2024, for our workshop: "The Relevance of EPDs in the Composites Industry."
