I wrote about the R.I.C.E. Estimation Framework using a Decipad notebook to walk through how RICE works, how it doesn't, and why you're probably breaking it with your own numbers. → Link in 1st comment! The idea for Decipad came when I was building YLD. YLD is an engineering and design consultancy, and while working with a range of business clients we noticed the gap between tools for programmers and everyone else was massive. It was just so complicated for non-developers to collaborate and meaningfully contribute to a modern company in a data-driven way. They either: 1) Got stuck with excel on their own. 2) Needed help from a developer/analyst. I'm an open-source developer and know how much knowledge we create from working together. But outside of that, people are still emailing excel files to each other. And the worst part is that those files waste people's time because they always lead to the “Can you explain this excel sheet to me?” question (I bet most of you got this question before or asked it to someone else). We are building Decipad because most non-developer users know the problems they want to solve with data. They just lack the tool to do it.

Two of the very few founders who are crazy enough to challenge Big Tech are from Porto, Portugal We all use established products from US companies like Excel/GSheets, Powerpoint/Slides, the iPhone, etc. But very few European companies are trying to disrupt and innovate on these (some outdated) tools. We have: Pitch on PowerPoint/Slides Rows.com on Spreadsheets Mistral AI on AI Decipad on Documents Both Humberto Ayres Pereira (from Rows) and I come from the same small European city and country: Porto, Portugal How come? Are we crazy for taking on these challenges? Yeah. But what I feel is privilege. I'm privileged to be able to work on the problem of clearly telling stories with data. The same way Excel was not made for today's days and Rows.com is disrupting it, Documents were never made to tell stories with data and math. So we built Decipad to innovate on them. Watch this space. Disruption happens slowly until it happens all at once Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

Someone just built a $5.6M a year business on Decipad 🤯 With $3M in EBITDA (around 55% margins). It's a restaurant that hosts table games competitions. It only has 10 tables with 9 players per table. It's open 7 days per week and runs 7 events per week. The craziest thing is that they've modeled everything: - Revenue for the restaurants and competitions. - Costs of goods sold (includes food and beverages). - Rent depending on the location size and lease cost. - Staff salaries (12 dealers, 1 director, 1 manager and 8 cooks). - Customer acquisition costs (with 2 sales reps). - Maintenance costs with equipment. The total Capex for getting it up and running is of $1.5M, which means they would double the investment in the first 12 months. I'm a total business nerd and I love this stuff. If you'd like to use Decipad to do your own business reporting/modeling, DM me and I'll show you how it works.

Involving a wide range of key stakeholders increases the likelihood of successful major strategic decisions. For this process to be effective, a collaborative data analysis tool is essential. Such a tool should democratize access and give all teams an equal voice, enabling everyone to visualize the potential impact of these decisions. "How much money does a sushi restaurant make" was a hit with over 20k impressions and lots of comments. Because you guys are business nerds like I am, I decided to take it a step further and built a Decipad for it. 🔥 You can play around with my assumptions and see what impact they have on the business revenue. For example: 🤯 Staying open 1 extra hour every day adds 100k in annual revenue. 💸 Increasing avg eat-in order value from €45 to €55 adds 115k in annual revenue. 😢 Adding 2 more tables only adds 20k more in annual revenue. Playing with Decipad feels like playing with Notion when no one knew about it. I can see it becoming a game changing tool for founders and business owners who struggle to make decisions and tell stories when so much data and variables are involved. Maybe this will help you see it too. PS: Thanks Nuno for showing me around.
