I had a wonderful time attending the Defence In Space Conference (DiSC) 2024! Got to learn a lot with experts in the field and certainly jumped into a lot of conversations on tech, frequencies and bandwidth, but also broadly on my interests in policy expansion and risk mitigation! Getting into a STEM-dominated space (no pun intended) with mainly engineers, compsci experts and adjacents might have been challenging at first, but I grew to love it as I learned it was after all, a community of people who were all eager to develop the space dimension! Walking into the conference as someone with a social science, policy-oriented background, I eventually found my tight squeeze. I was able to have fruitful discussions with countless booths and panellists about topics as disparate as the environmental implications of satellites in space, to the regulation of frequencies and bandwidths here on Earth - I even managed to muster up enough courage to ask a panel talk about the former! All in all, it was a grand opportunity to learn more about this new and nascent industry. Disrupt the algorithm and learn more - in this case, I was able to come solo with a sole interest in learning more bout how advisory work best fits into space companies. As I made myself very clear to all the colleagues I bumped into in those two tedious days, space is an up-and-coming opportunity that makes it an exciting place to work in. I hope to see you all again at some point in the future.
