Yesterday, Paul Blythe, Growth Strategy Director - Defence told the tale of how sailors were recruited and trained to fight at the Battle of Trafalgar at the Annual Trafalgar Dinner 2024. The Battle of Trafalgar took place on 21 October 1805. This date is celebrated annually across the country and a special service is held on the oldest warship still in commission, HMS Victory, in Portsmouth. This battle was pivotal in stopping Napoleon invading Great Britain as it knocked his Navy out of the war and stopped the 200,00 soldiers he had waiting in Holland from crossing the Channel. It is is dedicated to honouring the death of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died during the Battle. Dinners and events are held across Great Britain around this date to celebrate how 27 Royal Navy ships defeated (sunk or captured) the combined 33 ships of France and Spain. It stopped the invasion. The British were out-gunned by 474 cannon and out-manned by over 8,000 sailors. The battle was won because of brilliant tactics, inspired leadership and the rigorous training and drill of the British sailors - firing 2 or 3 times the cannon to every single French or Spanish shot. They celebrated annually across the country and a special service is held on the oldest warship still in commission, HMS Victory, in Portsmouth. This battle was pivotal in stopping Napoleon invading Great Britain as it knocked his Navy out of the war and stopped the 200,00 soldiers he had waiting in Holland from crossing the Channel.
