International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women - but also to reflect on what more we can do as a sector to support gender equality and career progression.   For female students, the transition from university to the workplace comes with unique challenges. Access to mentorship, career development opportunities, and inclusive environments can make a real difference in their future success. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 The latest Save the Student survey highlights a growing challenge in the Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) sector: affordability pressures are increasingly shaping where students choose to live. With rising costs affecting everything from tuition to daily expenses, the demand for cost-effective, high-quality student housing has never been greater. As accommodation providers, we must continue adapting our approach - not just by focusing on affordability but by ensuring that students feel connected, supported, and part of a thriving community. This means: -𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲: well-maintained facilities, student support services, and inclusive, social environments. -𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: developing accommodation solutions that work for students at all income levels. -𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀: including sustainable initiatives that reduce operational costs without compromising student experience. At Derwent fm, we understand that building a strong sense of community within student accommodation goes beyond providing great spaces - it’s about creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and giving back. Our team at Arts University Bournemouth hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning & Book Sale, bringing together students and colleagues to raise money for a fantastic cause. With a great selection of book donations, homemade bakes, and plenty of conversation, we’re thrilled to share that the event raised over £300 for Macmillan Cancer Support! Community engagement plays a vital role in student wellbeing and experience, and events like this showcase the value of creating spaces where students can come together, feel at home, and support meaningful causes. According to an analysis by London Economics, commissioned by Universities UK, the UK's higher education sector supports approximately 768,000 full-time jobs and generates £71 billion in gross value added (GVA), with a total economic output of £116 billion.
