Cathedral Quarter BID, Belfast
Non-profit Organizations
CQ BID, an independent not-for-profit Business Improvement District (BID) aiming to improve Belfast's Cathedral Quarter.
About us
First established amongst the business community in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and Smithfield & Union area in October 2016, the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID) renewed its mandate in 2021. Its focus is on delivering specific improvements needed by local businesses and organisations throughout the area. The wider Cathedral Quarter area is the leading destination for culture, hospitality, tourism, enterprise, and learning, offering a dynamic and genuine experience of Belfast for residents and visitors alike. The CQ BID gives the area’s stakeholders the opportunity to continue delivering improvements and benefits, working together into the future. Destination CQ is a democratically elected not-for-profit organisation with a voluntary Board of Directors that is representative of the area’s businesses. Under government legislation, all BIDs have a five-year tenure, at the end of which they must be re-elected in order to continue their work.

🌆 New Research To Assess Our Night-time Economy Launches 🌆 The city’s three BIDs, the Department for the Economy, and Tourism NI have commissioned a new research project – representing a £60k investment. It will examine the value of Northern Ireland’s night-time economy, identify challenges that impact its development, and provide recommendations based on successful policies implemented elsewhere. Following a competitive process, initiated by DfE, Ipsos UK has been appointed to lead the first-of-its kind research, in collaboration with Nordicity. It is expected that the research will be completed this summer, and will focus on Belfast, Derry~Londonderry and Enniskillen. Economy Minister, Dr. Caoimhe Archibald, said, “I am committed to supporting a safe, diverse and thriving night economy. This research will help us to better understand the value of the night-time economy, the issues it faces, and the interventions that will help us to unlock its potential.” The research will consider issues such as transport provision and connectivity, licensing laws, safety, and our arts and tourism offering. Retail, hospitality and tourism sectors have displayed resilience in emerging from the pandemic and continue to navigate a challenging economic climate. This in-depth research will better consider the issues facing the night-time economy and how best to address them. Damien Corr, Manager of Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District said, “having recently appointed the City’s Night Time Czar, Cathedral Quarter BID, Belfast One and Linen Quarter BIDs understood that it was essential that this research is commissioned if we are to capitalise on the opportunities for the Nighttime economy of this great City. We are delighted that other statutory partners have come on board and we are confident that the research will help shape good policy across the sectors” It is expected that the research findings will be made available this summer. Dr. Ricky Lawton, Director of Economic Evaluation at Ipsos UK said, “Quality research is the basis of all good decision making. Although its value is recognised, the night-time economy will remain intangible, or unvalued, without this investment so we are pleased to be appointed alongside our partner Nordicity to deliver this important project.” #NightTimeEconomy #CQBID #Belfast

🎉 Festival Village Brings 8,600 Visitors to Cathedral Quarter on St. Patrick's Day 🎉 The Festival Village, sponsored by CQ BID and programmed by Belfast TradFest, saw an incredible 8,600 people visit Cathedral Quarter to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, significantly increasing footfall across the area. With live music, entertainment, and a buzzing atmosphere, the festival helped drive traffic to local businesses, boosting trade for the local economy. With key locations including Cathedral Gardens, Saint Anne’s Square, and The MAC, the festival encouraged thousands to explore the district, reinforcing Cathedral Quarter’s reputation as a top destination for large-scale events. The strong turnout highlights the demand for outdoor festivals and city-centre experiences, which continue to attract both locals and tourists. CQ BID remains committed to supporting events that bring energy and footfall to Cathedral Quarter, ensuring it remains a thriving hub for festivals, arts and hospitality. With more events on the horizon, it’s clear that festivals like this play a key role in boosting the local economy and making the area a must-visit destination. #CQBID #CathedralQuarter #BusinessImprovementDistrict #Tradfest

Congratulations to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Belfast City Council on securing the All Ireland Fleadh for 2026 and 2027. This is fantastic news for Cathedral Quarter and the wider city. Logistically, it has been described as the biggest mobilisation of people on the Island of Ireland attracting in the region of 700,000 people from all over the world. The Fleadh will deliver an economic dividend of £60m for the City. CQ BID welcomes the economic benefit and as the Cultural hub of the City, we are excited about the positive impact on our reputation as a City of Culture. Looking forward to more moments like this as we become part of the community at Cotton Court.
