So looking forward to the annual Geographical Association conference in a couple of weeks - I am delighted to be sharing 2 sessions this year! Firstly discovering why are Scandinavian countries so happy? Exploring why the Nordic countries consistently rank in the top 10 in the happiness index and examining their political, economic and cultural geographies. Plus! First access to our new FREE Happy Nordics resource and then a second session exploring the new volcanic era in Iceland with Elen Steadman Offering a physical and human perspective, our lecture will outline the causes of a new era of tectonic activity and how new technologies have informed decision-making. We'll also explore the connections of the tectonic hazard to people and their social, economic and political impacts nationally and internationally. We are also facilitating the Teachmeet (sponsored by Discover the World Education) Looking forward to seeing the geography community at this wonderful event 🌍

This week, we celebrate the voices of women across cultures, borders, and languages. 🌎💬 Language is power—it shapes our stories, connects us, and amplifies the voices of those who have paved the way for equality. From "féminisme" (French) to "feminismo" (Spanish) to "নারীবাদ" (Bengali)—every word carries strength, history, and resilience. 🗣️ Let’s honor the women who break barriers, translate dreams into reality, and speak up for change in every language. 🌸💪 Download our poster below on Polyglot Women of the World from us at Discover the World Education: https://lnkd.in/ev34AJ6e #InternationalWomensDay #IWD #WomenInLanguage #SpeakUpForChange #PolyglotWomenOfTheWorld

People often ask why I spend part of my holidays as a Teacher Tour Leader for Discover the World Education. For me, it's quite simple, as I love teaching, and I love Iceland, so it's an absolute privilege combining the two! The tour I led last week really did highlight why I do this though, and was probably my most rewarding tour to date. For the students I guided, it was their first school trip in 5 years (not just their first overseas residential, but their first school trip at all). This is the ongoing impact the pandemic has had on students experiencing environments in the field... Learning outside the classroom experiences have a huge variety of beneficial impacts (which I recently wrote about in my article in Innovate magazine). It was great to see these benefits in action last week, with impacts ranging from students who had been disengaged and lacking understanding in the classroom environment saying "I get it now, Miss!", to a SEND student gaining the confidence to speak to me, and others, and feeling like the experience of the trip made her feel like she could "take on the world now!". This proves we should never underestimate the power of learning outside the classroom, fieldwork, and expedition experiences for students. Looking forward to returning to Iceland with another group at Easter!

As a teacher, you can help improve your student’s mood by taking learning outside. Did you know, 10-20% of young people suffer from poor mental health? Although it can be difficult to plan outside learning Due to time, weather and location... Even just 10 minutes outdoors can boost young people’s mental health. Here’s how👇 🙋♀️Boosts confidence & resilience Higher self-esteem means better classroom engagement, as students are more likely to take risks and push themselves in their learning 💬Strengthens language & communication skills Outdoor learning can provide a peaceful place for quieter children to find their voice. For others, outdoor space can offer space for students to express themselves by running around and playing games 🧠Encourages problem solving skills Because there’s more space for children to work together 🌳Develops an appreciation for nature Research shows that children who spend time in nature are happier. This can also help build an appreciation for the natural world ✏️Engages multiple senses This provides an opportunity to reboot the brain, which can have a knock-on effect on the rest of the day’s learning 🔗Easy outdoor activities you can add to your lessons: https://bit.ly/4jHKJAP #childrensmentalhealthweek #outdoorlearning #mentalhealthawareness
