Hydraulic systems play a critical role in ensuring aircrafts get from point A to point B safely and reliably. However the weight of these systems means an aircraft could be carrying over two tonnes of hydraulic equipment onboard, resulting in huge amounts of fuel needed just to lift and power them. We utilise new enabling technologies to create products that can change the way we handle power and motion, and deliver and control energy. Domin CTO, Simon Jones, explains what this means for aerospace when he was interviewed for Aerospace Global News. Hydraulic servo valves have remained unchanged for decades—until now. Domin is revolutionising these critical components with modern manufacturing tools like metal 3D printing, and The Cool Parts Show just featured our innovations. In this episode, we discussed how additive manufacturing has transformed servo valve design to make them, smaller, lighter, more compact, and more efficient. We’ve reimagined hydraulics without legacy design constraints, integrating organic fluid galleries and a flexible spool design, in the episode, Peter Zelinski and Stephanie Hendrixson comment on this: 🗨️ "Starting from scratch and rethinking hydraulic valves from the ground up using additive manufacturing led to features like these cavities for holding the hydraulic fluid in operation. These galleries for oil are not simple geometric shapes like drilled holes, but instead very organic, somewhat reminiscent of a human heart. This is a valve completely reimagined from the starting point that 3D printing is now available as the production process." DTSquare GmbH specialises in engineering, testing, and test benches, guiding clients from conceptualisation to final testing, employing agile development methodologies built upon a robust scientific foundation. In collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), DTSquare embarked on a project aimed at evaluating drive components subjected to complex, multifaceted forces - rotational, axial, and lateral. Domin Valves were central to the operation, with the need to control a hydraulic cylinder with a 0.5mm stroke and 6kN of force at 200 Hz and have a maximum bandwidth of around 600 Hz. The cylinder seamlessly accommodated six Domin Valves, ensuring minimal resonance and a bespoke system of fibre-reinforced flexures and bearings, enhancing load application precision with minimal clearance. This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to advancing the test and simulation industry by enabling innovative solutions. We're featured in the latest issue of The TCT Group magazine, after Laura Griffiths interviewed Marcus Pont to discuss Domin's journey into finding and utilising the best modern tools that can transform an industry. In the interview, Marcus goes back to the foundations of Domin, and recalls the path of understanding how metal 3D printing can really be utilised as a manufacturing tool. He discusses researching materials, design opportunities, economics and skill sets, all which contribute to the production of hydraulic products that truly add value. An excerpt from the article reads: 🗨️ The ‘killer app’ is additive manufacturing’s holy grail. Find something that only 3D printing can do or do better, and you’ve cracked it. For Domin, a UK-based manufacturer of high-performance hydraulic valves, that moment came from a series of fortunate events and a conviction that additive manufacturing, somehow, somewhere, could be used to change an industry.
