This week, Tom Owtram, Managing Director of The Vine Strategy Group, attended the inaugural Sustainability in Drinks (SiD) Conference in London, which brought together industry leaders to explore how sustainability can drive value across the drinks sector. We were honoured to hear from two influential keynote speakers, Jancis Robinson OBE MW and Judith Batchelar OBE. Their powerful insights into climate action, sustainable business practices, and the future of our industry were truly inspiring. Here are Tom’s key takeaways from the event: Value through sustainability: Jancis Robinson emphasised the importance of building a more sustainable drinks industry for future generations, covering everything from healthy ecosystems to sustainable packaging. The cost of inaction: Judith Batchelar highlighted the urgent need for businesses to take climate change seriously. She focused on the financial and environmental risks of inaction, alongside the increasing role of government regulation and consumer demand. Biodiversity and living soils: Biodiversity and healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable wine production. We must raise awareness of the vital role they play in the long-term success of the industry. Driving efficiency through sustainability: Sustainability isn't just about reducing costs—it’s about delivering long-term value. By reducing emissions and improving efficiency, businesses can create a more resilient supply chain and stronger financial performance. Collaboration is essential: Discussions led by industry leaders such as Stephen Cronk (Maison Mirabeau l B Corp™) and João Luis Barroso (Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Programme) highlighted the need for collaboration across the entire supply chain. Big brands and retailers hold the key to accelerating the shift to sustainability, but working together will drive real change. We were delighted to organise the "Diversity in People and Nature"photography exhibition, curated by Tom Owtram, showcasing the work of Tim Atkin MW and Jamie Goode. The exhibition celebrated the connection between people, nature, and the wine industry, reminding us that sustainability is about more than just the environment—it’s about empowering people. All proceeds from the sale of signed prints supported The Drinks Trust, a charity dedicated to the drinks and hospitality workforce. Reflecting on his experience, Tom said: "The SiD Conference highlighted just how essential it is for the drinks industry to approach sustainability in an integrated and strategic way. The future of our industry depends on working together, and with the right tools and strategy, we can create meaningful progress." Special thanks to Janet Harrison and Judy Kendrick for their vision and leadership in co-founding SiD and bringing the industry together to tackle these critical issues.
