Understanding the Workforce Impact of Caregiving From 2018-2023 The relationship between caregiving responsibilities and workforce participation, especially for women, is one of the most pressing challenges in today’s labour market. Recent data from 2018 to 2023 highlights some crucial trends around workforce exits due to caregiving. This is especially relevant for industries like financial services, where flexible work policies are becoming vital to retain talent. The "Motherhood Penalty" Persists Women still bear the brunt of caregiving responsibilities, leading to significantly higher workforce exits. Our data shows that between 22-25% of women leave the workforce within the first year after childbirth, a trend that has been consistent from 2018 to 2023. In contrast, men’s exit rates due to caregiving hover around 4-5%, showing a stark gender disparity. What’s Driving These Trends? Caregiving Responsibilities: Women dedicate nearly twice as much time to caregiving compared to men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics. This added pressure often results in reduced work hours, missed promotions, or leaving the workforce entirely. The Role of Flexibility: Deloitte’s 2023 survey highlights the importance of flexibility. Remote and hybrid work models have been a lifeline for women and men alike. In fact, 75% of men and 67% of women reported that remote work improved their ability to manage caregiving and work-life balance. Workplace Bias: Despite contributing heavily to their organizations, many caregivers—especially women—still face bias in performance evaluations. 33% of dual caregivers (those balancing childcare and eldercare) report that their performance isn’t fairly assessed.
