The quality of building work we've encountered during cladding remediation efforts has raised some concerns, with poor workmanship often being uncovered. This is ultimately causing lengthy delays with cladding remediation and delays where the Building Safety Regulator is involved due to delays in the approvals process. Resources could have been directed towards new housing development, but they are being diverted to remediation. This shift directly jeopardises the government's ambitious target of delivering 1.5 million new homes, as rectifying past mistakes takes precedence. While the proposed levy is aimed at funding safety improvements, it's evident that addressing the root cause of these delays – substandard construction – should be part of the solution if we want to meet our housing goals.
