About us
The world is changing fast and education needs to keep up. Edge is an independent, politically impartial education foundation. We want education to be relevant to the twenty-first century. We gather evidence through research and real world projects and partnerships and use this to lead the debate and influence policy and practice. Edge believes all young people need to be equipped with the skills that today’s global, digital economy demands, through a broad and balanced curriculum, high quality training, engaging real world learning and rich relationships between education and employers. Earlier this month we released a new report in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, “Widening Participation and Degree Apprenticeships”. The research looks at the extent to which degree apprenticeships are part of existing university outreach plans and tries to identify the barriers that might exist for including Degree Apprenticeships in Widening Participation activities. We commissioned the work because we wanted to understand whether Degree Apprenticeships are really expanding opportunities for higher level study to those from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. https://lnkd.in/en-RErJX

Primary education is often framed as a stepping-stone to secondary school rather than a crucial stage of learning in its own right. This mindset can result in prioritising standardised testing and a one-size-fits-all approach. At Edge, we have long called for the return of a pre-apprenticeship programme to widen access for young people, most recently in our Flex without Compromise report. However, it is important that the Government learns lessons from the previous traineeships programme to ensure that this delivers for both young people and businesses.
