Cellphone bans in schools: Easy to enforce? Banning cellphones in schools has gained momentum across various states and districts, but enforcement remains a challenge. Educators find that while setting the policy is straightforward, managing compliance is complex. Principal Sham Bevel of Bayside Middle School in Virginia Beach noted the difficulty in getting students to forgo their phones for traditional games. Various methods to enforce the bans include using lockers or Yondr pouches, which lock the phones until the end of the school day. However, these methods have their drawbacks, such as students finding ways around the restrictions. Despite parents' divided opinions, some experts and educators argue that strict enforcement can lead to better focus and improved test scores. The effectiveness of these bans ultimately hinges on consistent enforcement and addressing the nuanced needs of all students, including those with disabilities. Should cellphones be banned in schools? Los Angeles’s school board thinks so. LA is the second largest school district in the nation. As with any issue, there are pros and cons. Parents like the ability to be able to contact their child at any time, while teachers are often the cellphone police in classrooms. A few other states have similar bans, including Ohio, Indiana and Florida. LA’s ban will be implemented in January 2025. What do you think about allowing students to have cellphones in schools? #cellphones #PhoneBanDebate #schools #teachers

Sadly, these district and state-wide bans on cellphones are simply laughable. Easily, students can and do switch their diversions to their school-issued devices whenever they choose. Without a doubt, throughout the nation, schools are overwhelmed by the academic and social problems stemming from students’ use of electronic devices during school hours. I am a high school teacher who has been in the classroom since before cellphones were common, so I have witnessed it all first hand. Moreover, within different administrations and policies, I have repeatedly battled these problems with some victories and some defeats: but, it is always the teachers who have to be on the front line of the battle for hearts and minds. During instructional time, teachers have to constantly correct and redirect student behavior, which is impairaed by digital distractions, while they magically and mindfully find sufficient energy and time to instruct, cover content and assess students’ progress. Some things are going to be sacrificed— especially when teachers do not have backup from administrators and parents— because there is not enough energy and time for teachers to fight the battle while adequately doing the job of instruction. As a society, we have to change our mindset and prioritize the potential growth and joy of education, and we have to establish new cultural values for schools, teaching and learning. Parents have to instill and cultivate these values in children so that schools can do their part. We all have to create a new paradigm in which education is a primary human expectation and schools are socially relevant once more. Until that time, no policy or ban will keep students from seeking diversion and teachers will still be battling alone on the front lines.
The nation’s largest school district is poised to ban students’ cellphone use during the school day a few months into the 2024-25 school year. Watch this interview with the district's chancellor to get more insights about the forthcoming policy. #K12 #CellphonePolicy

Unlike many recent political issues, school cellphone ban policies have largely received bipartisan support. At the same time, research on the effectiveness of cellphone bans is limited, and although multiple states are adopting these bans, challenges remain with enforcement, accommodating exceptions, and equity. #schools #mentalhealth #phones #socialmedia #publichealth https://lnkd.in/gGweNKS3

After 25 years in digital asset creation and team development, I now explore the dynamic between humans and technology. MSc Cyberpsychology, Ethics, Privacy, Security, and AI.
Virginia guidance suggests restricting phones from ‘bell to bell’ in schools "Virginia parents and teachers have witnessed first-hand the damage cell phones in schools has had on our youth’s academic, mental and physical health and social development.” IF we are going to experiment on our children, I would suggest a couple things to give this experiment any kind of validity and value to us all 1. Clearly, empirically, guantitatively and qualitatively define the current problem statement. What EXACTLY is the academic impact of cellphones to our youth? Have grades dropped? By how much? How are we directly attributing this to cell phones? How will we measure and report the changes? 2. Our schools should not be collecting, analyzing or otherwise discussing our kids mental health. Period. #privacy and #security issues up front, but a close second is that few of our school personnel are qualified to asses our kids mental health even IF parents and kids agree to consent to such activities. Self answered surveys? Biased, negative focused questions designed to find issues? These aren't professional mental health services. 3. Define physical health. What exactly are cellphones doing to our youths physical health and how is this taking place at school? Given that our kids sit around for 8 plus hours a day while in school I might assume it has nothing to do with their basic physical health ... some offshoot of self harm that is taking place at school? 4. As far as social development goes, we have a LOT to discuss, learn and understand here. Are we "adults" simply saying that our youth dont behave the way we did and the way we therefore want them to? Had we grown up with the digital world as kids would we have had a different social development? We've taught our kids to be cautious and scared. Now we want to blame cellphones for their "hands off" approach to life? Finally if we decide to experiment on our kids the adults in the school should lead by example. No cellphones for them, bell to bell. Show the kids how it's done. So, if we decide that school is some kind of battleground for saving our kids from the evils of the digital world, rather than an opportunity to help them become good citizens of it ... let's at least conduct a strong scientific experiment with our theories clearly stated, our methodologies transparently documented, our assumptions and limitations stated and KPIs and Goals ambiguously posted that would be good. Me, I'd opt for cellphones allowed in High School with individual teachers setting classroom rules with consequences for failing to follow them strictly enforced and supported by all. A pact signed by teachers, students and parents. Importantly I'd insist on a program teaching #criticalthinking #medialiteracy and #personalresponsibility and #accountability Independent people. Not codependent people. https://lnkd.in/eivs7Hqf
